His Cypriot colleague, Pascali Panitatis, charged with espionage, remained in prison pending the com- pletion of judicial proce- dures. Both men were re- manded in custody on Jan. 25. No trial date was set. The magistrate who or- dered bail said the evidence against Legrecht was flimsy but that there was little doubt the Panitatis came to Israel in the service of ter-_ rorist .organizations with which he maintained con- tact in Cyprus. Meanwhile, the Foreign Press Association in Israel has engaged a prominent Tel Aviv attorney, Dr. Yehoshua Rottenstreich, to follow the case to determine whether any procedures or precedents growing out of it could affect the news gathering duties of other correspondents working in Israel. Rottenstreich has declined any fee for his ser- vice. Eytan Named Chief of Staff - TEL AVIV (JTA)—The Cabinet's approval of a "fighting general" to be Is- rael's- next Chief of Staff when, for the first time in 30 years, the nation is engaged in direct peace negotiations with one of its Arab neighbors, raised eyebrows here. Defense Minister Ezer Weizman's choice of Gen. Rafael Eytan for the number one military post seemed, in some quarters, to be ignoring the new politi- cal circumstances. Eytan, at 49, is re- rded as one of Israel's p combat soldiers with W unexcelled record as a paratroop and infantry commander. The other leading contender, Gen. Herzl Shafir, is noted for his negotiating skills and his outstanding abilities as an organizer and ad- ministrator. Weizman said the prim- ary duty of the Chief of Staff is to keep the army in peak condition, primed for com- bat at any moment. A letter to customers from Richard Metallo, district manager of Borg Warner's York Division, apologized for the error "which in- cluded a picture of old Jerusalem with an incorrect caption stating that the old section of Jerusalem was part of western Jordan, and further,- that the wall that rings the old city, was refer- red to as the 'Wailing Wall.' RES. 642-66 a -81RmIN Sadat's Pro- Nazi Past Recalled by Soviet Agency LONDON (JTA)—For the first time in its prop- aganda clashes with Egypt, the Soviet Union has refer- red to President Anwar Sadat's pro-Nazi activities during World War II. Tass, the Soviet News Agency, did so in a report Jan. 24 about the opening of a museum to commemorate Field Marshal Erwin von Rommel, commander of Hi- tler's Afrika Korps. , at Mersa Matruh in Egypt's western desert. The Egyptian decision, Tass commented, was "un- derstandable in view of the fact that the top leaders of the country do not even con- sider it necessary to conceal their sympathies for Hitler and his ideas." It was also "an insult to the memory of millions of pdople who died in the struggle against fas- cism" and "an open chal- lenge to world public opin- ion," Tass added. It was recalled that in 1942, while a junior of- ficer in the Egyptian army, Sadat helped a Nazi spy ring in Cairo to communicate with Rommel's headquarters in the western desert when the Germans ap- peared to be on the brink of invading Egypt. Sadat was eventually jailed, but in later years never disguised his pro= Hitler sympathies, claim- ing that his only goal at the time was to free Egypt of British rule. Israel Merchant Marines Striking TEL AVIV (JTA) — More .than 30 Israel-flag ships, a substantial portion of the merchant marine, remain idle at home and abroad as efforts to end the two- week-old strike of officers and licensed seamen col- lapsed Tuesday. A Haifa labor court re- fused to issue a back-to- work order to the officers and reversed an earlier order addressed to the sea- men. The effect was to ren- der the strike legal. The court acted on grounds that the shipping companies refused to accept its arbitration proposal.
