Novel Traces Demanding Rise
of Woman in Publishing World

Aviva Hellman has writ-
ten a new novel about the
cutthroat world of women's
magazines, entitled "In
Place of Love," (Put-
nam's).
Mrs. Hellman is the wife
of Yehuda Hellman, execu-
tive director of the Confer-
ence of Presidents of Major
Jewish Organizations.
The book concerns the
rise to publishing power of
Kate Johnson, who leaves a
broken marriage and a mid-
western background deter-
ined to conquer New
ork. Hesitant at first, but
gifted with native shrewd-
ness, she brings her concept
of the new American worn-
en to the tired, cynical
world of New York maga-
zine publishing.
Assuming control of the
floundering magazine Wom-
en Today, Kate stamps her
vision of the young, daring
female on the consciouness
of a vast readership.

One of the basic reasons
far excusing women from
such time-oriented perform-
ances is the nature of the
obligatory performance of
tending to the household
and to the children is con-
sidered more important and
takes priority over other
performances.

Women are not involved
in certain religious com-
mandments and perform-
ances.
It is not that women are
not involved, it is rather that
Jewish law excuses women
from the obligation, of ob-
serving these command-
ments in the form of execut-
ing a performance.
The general rule is that
certain performances (there
are exceptions) which are
commanded to be done at a
specific tim-e are the ones_
from which women are ex-
cused.

, Furthermore, the sPe-
cific religious perform-
ances in specified time

are geared t )- esw.b-
lish a certain state of mind
mnd
which brings about devo- •
tion and commitment to
some Jewish ideal.
The devotion and commit-
ment of the Jewish home-
maker to her responsibili-
ties is considered at least
equal to the devotion and
commitment that would be
achieved by the specific per-
formance of a command-
ment.

While it is true that there
have been women who have
performed some of the ex-
cused commandments,
women traditionally do not
perform such command-
ment's in order to demon-
strate the unique role of
Jewish womanhood in Juda-
ism. Indeed, if there was no
uifference between the res-
ponsibilities of men and
women, the role of the Jew-
ish woman would lose its
identity and become over-
shadowed by male domi-
nance.
