THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, January 27, 1978 43 Mrs. Loeb Leaves New York Position NEW YORK—Frances 1 Loeb, niece of former New York Governor Herbert Lehman, is leaving her post as head of the New York City Commission for the United Nations and for the Consular Corps. ( Mrs. Loeb will be re- placed by a Koch appointee, Gillian Sorensen. In her volunteer post, Mrs. Loeb was responsible for directing a staff to handle inquiries about hous- ing( "'cation, traffic, con- Suli fraud, police, family matters and legal problems made by families of mis- sions and conculates in New York. Mrs. Loeb held the post for the past 12 years, being first appointed by Mayor Lindsay and reappointed by Mayor Beame. Rabbi Will Lead Education Group WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rabbi Bernard Goldenberg, associate director of the Na- tional Society for Hebrew Day Schools, was elected president of the Council for American Private Educa- tion at its recent annual meeting. The National So- ciety- for Hebrew Day Schools is a charter mem- ber of CAPE. and Gold- enberg has represented the organization on CAPE's board of directors since De- cember 1971. Who Would Have Thought? By DAVID SCHWARTZ (Copyright 1977, JTA, Inc.) Hollywood, we are told, will soon begin work on a moving picture about Israeli Premier Menahem Begin and it is working also on a picture about Dayan. Foreign ,Minister Minister Moshe would have thought it? Why are there no pictures about the Arab leaders...Jews all of a sudden so popular...it's nice of course. Why is it? Another thing those polls. Public opinion experts have been going around with their pencils—Who do you favor, Arabs or Israelis...What do they find? Prof. Seymour Martin Lipset of Stanford University and Prof. William Schneider of Harvard, have been studying the results and in a current magazine, they write: "There has never been a poll which has found more support for the Arabs than for the Israelis, no matter how the question has been asked." The only polls favoring the Arabs seems to be the ones in the United Nations. Why is public opinion on the side of Israel? The main reason, I think, is that a majority of Americans are Zionists: I don't mean that they sing Hatikva or even have heard of it, but they think that if the Moslems have 20 or so countries. the Jews are entitled to one little country and that is all that Zionism basically means. There is a bit of a sense of justice in every person. As old John Adams used to say, no man Spektor Leads Israel Tour for Michigan Travel Agents Thirty-four Michigan travel agents jointed a tour to -Israel sponsored by El Al Israel Airlines and the Israel Govern- rni– Tourist office. On the tour, led by Ami Spektor, El Al' strict manager for Michigan, the travel agents - were acquainted with the historical and biblical sights, as well as with resorts, Jerusalem and other points of interest in the country. The world also knows that Jerusalem is a Jewish city and for the Arabs to claim it or even to claim East Jerusalem as their own is like the Jews claiming to own Cairo or east Cairo. Also, there is the. religious factor. When Lloyd George announced the promulgation of the Balfour Declaration, some members of Parliament strongly opposed it. Lloyd George invited them to have breakfast with him on the following morning. When the time came, Lloyd' George called for his secretary to hand him the Bible and he began to read the various prophecies about the re-establishment of the Jewish state. When he finished, Lloyd George said, "You see, I can do nothing about it. It is all here foretold." A few weeks ago, a large Christian organization ran advertisements in the general press supporting Israel. .There is also a sporting factor. Little Israel has won the admiration of the world for the courage to stand up against a whole array of enemies. The little fellow who can hold his own and knock out the big guy has always fascinated the world. I call it .a sporting factor, inspiring all in the battle of life. There is also the drama side. The revival of a land after 2,000 years is quite a drama. Maybe the Arab oil monopoly hasn't benefitted the Arabs in the polls. Our anti-trust laws forbid business houses getting together to fix prices. When Arab countries get together . to fix oil prices, it is just as monopolitic. Finally, I think, public opinion favors Israel from the common sense point of view, seeing in the development of Israel a step in the general development of the world and especially of the Middle East which has been one of the most lagging areas and sadly needs new forces. The late King Abdullah of Transjordan held this view and perhaps Mr. Sadat shares it. Swiss Leaves Post of Pro-Israel Unit GENEVA (JTA)—Pierre Auber, who was appointed Foreign Minister last month, has resigned from his post as president of the Swiss-Israel Friendship As- sociation. When Auber's name as candidate was brought up he was attacked even by members of his own party who declared that Auber was identified as pro-Israel and could not be Foreign Minister of a neutral coun- try like Switzerland. One may tell the truth— even to one's father. Gush Hope Begin Sticks to His Guns WASHINGTON (JTA)— Yedidya Atlas, a spokesman for the Gush Emunim, who has been visiting many Jew- ish communities in the United States and Canada, said that the Gush members hope that Premier Men- ahem Begin of Israel will "abide by his principles" regarding West Bank settle- ments. He stated that the Gush Emunim will demonstrate its position and "we hope it is still Begin's position that Judea and Samaria are in- tegral parts of Israel. It is the heartland of the land of Israel and we cannot give up the heartland of Israel. NOV one would expect us to give up Tel Aviv or Haifa or Jerusalem, and Judea and Samaria are rio less impor- tant to the people of Israel than these cities. In fact, Judea and Samaria are his- torically more important than Tel Aviv or Haifa." Atlas said that historical- ly, the Jews are the Palesti- nians but "we understand the plight of those people who are now living under military rule and we do not think that it is a bad idea to have local municipal auton- omy." for your party By SAM FIELD • FIRESTONE U JEWELRY lluntriond. & Call ell, Henumntert. fonovIrN & U nlrh liepuirsn• 399-1320 SUITE 31$ ADVANCE BLDG. 23077 Grgenfield at 9 Mile (313) 557-1860 ■•■ •1111111INIMP PERMANENT HAIR REMOVAL - , — 4 FREE Consultation private and confidential by appointment L Licensed icensed Electrologist 358-5493 ....- Music by Sam Barnett Big or small, we custom the music to your needs. 968-2563 LINEN GALLERY FINE BED, BATH & TAI Li LINEN Don't Miss Our After Inventory Sale 30%, 40% Sadat's Sincereity JERUSALEM (ZINS)—A Hebrew University poll fol- lowing Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's visit to Is- rael shows that 90 percent of Israelis believe that Sa- dat is sincere in his quest for peace.
