has been made that this is a
First Amendment issue.

not be restrained by the
government. The First,
Amendment does not obli-
gate you to give the Nazis a
platform.

ment is selective on other
matters and exercises free
choice in rejecting whatever
it pleases.
"I am not questioning
your right to air the Nazi
viewpoint. I am questioning
your good judgment. When
the Nazis opened their book-
store it was a legitimate
news item to report. It does
not follow, however, that

Shepherd said he refused

appearance of the Nazis on
the 11 o'clock program and
I felt that permitting the
Nazis to appear at 10:30
p.m. would not result in a
repudiation of the Nazi phi-
losophy. If the Nazis' pro-
gram of violence could not
be aired at 11 o'clock, I saw

PARIS (JTA)—The hus,-
band of Nazi-hunter Beate
Klarsfeld has announced
that a retired police
inspector was in fact the
head of the German gestapo
in Toulouse, southwest
France, during World War
II. .Serge Klarsfeld said
Karl-Heinz Muller, a retired
chief police inspector in
Lower Saxony, headed the
Toulouse gestapo from 1943
to 1944.
Under his directions, the
Nazis arrested and executed
dozens of French resistance
fighters and deported hun-
dreds of Jews to Germany.
Muller was S
- entenced to
death in absentia by. a
French military court in
1953.
Klarsfeld said the location
and date of birth of the
alleged Nazi war criminal -
coincided with a man sur-
named Muller his wife ques-
tioned in Germany. Karl-
Heinz Muller denied t,e
allegations.
Klarsfeld, who traced
Muller after going through
the archives of YIVO in
New York which contained
the Toulouse gestapo file,
said he would transmit Mul-
ler's dossier to the prose-
cutor who is heading the
West German bureau deal-
ing with war criminals.
Meanwhile an American
Nazi who formerly served
on the army's presidential
honor guard, has been con-
victed of assaulting a black
policeman in Washington,
D.C.
The policeman had
stopped at a gas station with
his wife.

essence of the Nazis' pro-
gram and I do not believe
that my continued right to
live is a matter for debate. I
will not sit in the same
room with the advocates of
a doctrine which killed

the show with the Nazis the
impression could be given
that a "balanced" approach
was being taken by the sta-
tion and that would raise
the Nazis in the minds of
many viewers to our level of
importance in the
community."
The Jewish War Veterans
have called for Christian-
son's resignation over the
incident, and the Michigan
Regional Advisory Board of
the ADL has asked for a
public appology from
Christianson.
The JWV said the station
has an obligation under
"FCC rules and regulations
and acceptable community
standards to insure that all
programming is free of
hatred and violence so
_viciously advocated by the
Nationalist Socialist
Movement.''
Meanwhile, the owner of
the building being leased by
the Nazi bookstore brought
suit in court this week to
have the Nazis evicted.
