Vigilance Against Nazi Revival

A showcase on display in the Wayne State
University Student Center carries warnings
against the rise of Nazism in this community.
The admonitions of a revival of the evil spirit of
-the 1930s and the 19405 actually embraces a
much larger sphere than the Greater Detroit
area. It is no longer neo-Nazism, but the
original Hitler-made product of hatred, enciting
to riots and to mass murders.
So vile is the new movement that a taped
program that was scheduled for Channel 56 was
cancelled, although a different. segment was
shown, serving as an added warning of an
impending danger, unless the movement is
checked in its very beginnings.
The American Nazi movement now appar-
ently gets its greatest encouragement from the
White Racists, the anti-Balck ranks in the
lunatic fringe of this country. It is the Black
who has been chosen as the special target of the
Nazi movement, and incidentally the haters
advocate violence against Jews.
The warnings now on display at Wayne State
University, sponsored by the university's Hillel
Foundation, appeal to reason and to the com-
mon sense of Americans who should understand
that even if the fomenters of hatred presently
are few in number their arrogance matches the
experiences of an earlier generation of wit-
nesses to a similar few under Adolf Hitler who
grew predominantly as rulers of the German
people, who contributed supporting forces for
tyranny and brutality.
Indeed, the timely warnings assume a univer-
sal aspect when the rising spirit of Nazism is
viewed in respect to evidence of its revival in
many areas, including Germany.
With the announcement that has just been

made regarding the forthcoming publication of
the diaries of the arch criminal associate of
Hitler, Josef Goebbels, who was the Nazi propa-
ganda minister, John Vanocur reported to the
New York Times from Bonn:
"The diary has moved onto the West German
best-seller list behind a translated version of the
"Hite Report,' and some book-sellers explain its
success as part of a growing German fascina-
tion with the Nazi era." --
The referred to report is among several
indicating a growing revival of "Nazi fascina-
tion." The warnings, therefore, are by no means
new and the time is ripe for serious concern.
The Hillel Foudnation efforts, together with
other liberal forces, is an encouragement that
the horrors of the past will not be forgotten, in
the task ahead not to permit its repetition. _

In principle this is correct, in practice it is edited by Philip L. Pick.

Vegetarianism Among Jews:
A Traditional Ideal Defined

Is Waning Euphoria Justified?

Not only the settlers in the Sinai but Israelis
generally and their friends globally have be-
come concerned over Egyptian attitudes on
many issues involving the proposals for peace
advanced by Prime Minister Menahem Begin.
Is it possible that the many concessions
offered by Israel have not moved Anwar Sadat
to be a bit more conciliatory? Indeed, it is
possible.
At a dinner given in his honor in Rome by
Italian Foreign Minister Arnaldo Forlani, Is-
rael's Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan said:
"Israel is ready for an intensive and sus-
tained effort to overcome all difficulties. Eu-
rope's role and our view should now be to

strengthen the two sides in this resolve, and not
to try to formulate solutions of any kind."
While this does not spell despair and does not
advocate abandonment of euphoria, it does
express the hope that diplomats will permit
time and negotiations to resolve the issues. In
the meantime, however, scare headlines and
speculative media news juggling contribute
towards a rising concern that perhaps the Sadat
visit to Jerusalem might prove to be a trap for
Israel, while retaining the glory of sensational-
ism. Therefore, Israel and her friends hope that
reason will prevail in order to prevent dis-
ruption of the peace efforts.

The Lesson Russia Won't Learn

An almost internationally-symphonized voice
has been sounded in behalf of Anatoly Sha-
ransky, who is being persecuted by the Soviet
Union with drummed-up charges of spying.
The 172 academicians who have issued an
appeal in his behalf represent only a small frac-
tion of the public opinion sounded in defense of
the Jewish sufferer from Soviet animosities.

Yet the Russians are adamant in their pre-

judicial treatment of the Jewish and other
minorities. The dissidents are equally as deter-
minded to carry on the battle for freedom, but
the odds presently are against them. Yet, they
have world public opinion in their behalf. Why
can't the Russians learn the lesson being taught
them by the world's libertarians? Perhaps the
global public opinion will yet cause a greater
internal USSR action to mend the ways of a bias
that has turned towards offical Russian bigotry.

Perhaps an only copy still exists, after the Churban, of a vegetarian
cookery book in Yiddish and published in Vilna, Poland, by the famous
house Kletzkin in 1938, the year before the Second World War in which
Hitler occupation forces destroyed the millions of Polish Jewry. At
that time Jews were still living a fairly normal life. Fania Levando,
who was running a Jewish vegetarian restaurant in Vilna, the Kuch-
nia Dieta-Jarska, compiled and published for Yiddish readers this 235-
page volume of vegetarian recipes. These include such Jewish special-
ties as blintzes, lokshen soup, borsht, kreplach, huge'. cheesecake, cho-
lent, latkes, kneidlach, shtrudl, tzimmes, fritlach, and honeycake.
Mrs. Levando wrote: "Bat we often hear complaints that, 'without
meat there is nothing to cook.' So I have decided to publish this first
Yiddish vegetarian cookery book, with over 400 nourishing foods, in
order to propagate vegetarian cookery generally, and in particular to
serve those housewives who must keep a diet-kitchen."
At the end of her book Fania Levando attaches a number of m'
sages from Yiddish writers and artists who frequented her vegetaria-
restaurant in Vilna. These include Itzik Manger, J. Giterman, Marc
Chagal, Ch. S. Kazdan, Sh. Mendelssohn, N. Buxbaum.
Noteworthy about this volume is that the author also deals with
human relations and with man's regard for beasts and animal life.
There are appeals for fair treatment of animals. There is a poem ded-
icated to the horse as a valued adjunct to man; man's search for a
livelihood and help in daily chores. A chapter on "The Life of His
Beast" concludes: "What I would suggest is that if ever again on this
anguished planet we are to realize that His tender mercies do indeed
extend over all His works, even human creatures; and if ever again
we are to sing a full hymn of praise to the Creator of all Life, then
somehow all of us must ourselves regain, and help society itself
regain, some considerable regard for the lives of our beasts."
Philip I,. Pick has convincingly compiled the essay that gives sub-
stance to the ideal of vegetarianism and proves its traditionalism and
its influence upon an impressive element in Jewish ranks.
"Tree of Life" is a revealing anthology, instructive and convincing.
