TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Democratic Movement for
Change (DMC) appeared to
be on the verge of a split
that would create a new
faction with serious political
ramifications for the party
and Premier Menahem Be-
gin's coalition government.
A number of DMC lead-
ers, including five Knesset
members, have reportedly
agreed to bolt the party
because of dissatisfaction
with the leadership of Prof.
Yigael Yadin and dis-

Seminary Marks
80th Anniversary

NEW YORK — The Rabbi
Isaac Elchanan Theological
Seminary's 80th birthday
will be marked by a week-
long celebration, March 25-
April 2, honoring the 300
rabbis who have been or-
dained from the institution
since 1970.
The observance will in-
clude a Yeshiva University
Sabbath, an 80th anniver-
sary dinner and rabbinic
conferences for the alumni.
The seminary is an affiliate
of Yeshiva University.

agreement with the DMC's
activities in the political and
social spheres.
Most of the dissidents rep-
resent the DMC's dovish
Ashinooy (Change) faction.
They include MKs Amnon
Rubinstein, Mordechai Vir-
shuwsky, Steff Wertheimer
and Shmuel Toledano. -They
are expected to be joined by
Druze MK Zaidan Atashi
and possibly by Assaf Ya-
goury.
Should the -break occur,
the DMC would have to
relinquish one of the four
Cabinet portfolios it now
holds on the basis of its
strength in the Knesset.
Meanwhile, the Independ-

ent Liberal Party voted 48-
30 Friday not to join the
Likud-led government. The
decision was a rebuff to the
party's sole Knesset mem-
ber, Gideon Hamner, who
had argued that it was un-
wise for the ILP to remain
an outsider at a time of
momentous political events.
But veteran leader Moshe
Kol insisted that the faction
retain its independence.

Jewish Heirs Win
Funds From Art
Captured by Hitler

NEW YORK—Heirs of the
Alfred Cohen family, who
ransomed itself from Adolf
Hitler in January 1942 with
seven old Dutch master
paintings are $265,000 richer
owing to the sale of the
paintings.
The Dutch government re-
covered the art from a Sal-
zburg salt mine in 1946, and
they were sold in New York
last weekend to benefit the
family'g heirs.
Each of the paintings bore
a seal showing it was in
Hitler's private collection.
He hid the collection when
he realized his downfall was
near.
