Beth Shalom
Is Discussing
Ritual Changes
With sensitivity towards
both its traditional and lib-
eral members, Cong. Beth
Shalom is in the process of
discussing moderate
changes in women's in-
volvement in synagogue rit-
ual.
According to Rabbi David
Nelson, spiritual leader of
the Conservative congrega-
tion, the synagogue is
"trying to achieve a balance
between the traditional and
liberal members."

Last month the member-
ship met to discuss the in-
volvement of - women in the
synagogue ritual. The dis-
cussion was held in re-
sponse to a survey which
the ritual committee sub-
mitted to each member of
the congregation. The sur-
vey, according to the rabbi,
showed that 70 percent of
the respondents were in fa-
vor of proposed changes.
The ritual committee will
then take into consideration
the results of the survey
prior to making any deci-
sions about the women's
role in synagogue ritual.
From its inception, Cong.
Beth Shalom elected women
to serve on the executive
board, however, the change
in ritual participation of
women has been at a mod-
erate pace within the Halak-
hic guidelines provided by
the Law Committee of the
Rabbinical Assembly of
America.- Throughout the
period of gradual change
the greatest concern was
that there be mutual harmo-
ny among both its tradition-
al and liberal members.
At last month's meeting
Rabbi Nelson assured the
members that Conservative
rabbis and scholars "are
fully entitled" to discuss
changes in Jewish law.
"The Conservative move-
ment has as much right to
speak of Halakha and to
interpret it as our Orthodox
colleagues, who, of course,
challenge our right to do
so," he said.
The ritual committee of
the congregation, acting
with great sensitivity to all
concerned, will continue to
work on a program of im-
plementing the changes
within the synagogue.
In December, Chizuk Am-
uno Congregation in Balti-
more, a synagogue once
served by Rabbi Nelson,
voted to assign aliyot to
women and implemented
new regulations regarding
women's roles in ritual mat-
ters.
