Jewish News Ad Salesman Ben Gorney Celebrates 85th

people," Jewish News ad
salesman Ben Gorney pro-
claims to the newspaper's
staff as he enters the office
to begin his day drawing up
dvertisement and con-
tacting his clients.
Gorney, who will cele-
brate his 85th birthday
Wednesday, began his ca-
reer with The Jewish News

in 1970, after a successful
career in the clothing in-
dustry.
As a young man, Gorney
helped support his family
selling newspapers, later
landing a job at the Leo
Zuckerman ready-to-wear
store on Woodward. From
Zuckerman's, he moved to
Goldberg Brothers Depart-
ment Store where he met
Rose Lieber, to whom Gor-
ney was married for more
than 60 years. Mrs. Gorney
died last July.
Gorney later was em-
ployed as a fur buyer at the
Frank and Seder depart-
ment store here and was
promoted to head the F and
S coat department in Pitts-
burgh. After many years

there he was transferred to
the Bailey Co. store in
Cleveland where he super-
vised merchandising and
buying of wearing apparel
and furs.
He was associated with
the Denver Dry Goods Co.
in Denver, but his wife's
wish for him to be closer to
home brought him to a job
with Lamson Brothers Co.
in Toledo. Five years later,
after serving as buyer and
merchandiser of all wearing
apparel, the Gorneys re-
turned to Detroit.
Following a brief retire-
ment, Gorney returned to
work and was an advertis-
ing salesman for the North-
west Detroiter for 10 years,
prior to joining The Jewish
News staff.
Gorney exercises daily to
keep in shape.
A native of Bialystok,

Russia, Gorney came to De-
troit at age 7 with his par-
ents and brother, Jay, who
became a successful song-
writer.
Gorney has been a long-
time member of Perfection
Lodge of the Masons and is
a 32nd degree Shriner.
Gorney will be tendered a
party Wednesday on the oc-
casion of his birthday by his
daughter, Mrs. Herb
(Shirley) Miller. A son,
Richard, a former U.S. gov-
ernment chief engineer,
died in 1975. He is the
grandfather of eight, and
has two great-grand-
children.
