But enough self pity! As the authors of the restau- rant guide, "Meet,- Eat & Enjoy Greater Detroit", we're happy to take this opportunity to answer some of the questions were most frequently asked about our- selves and our book and, hopefully. clear up any mis- conceptions. We've an- swered these questions on radio, television, at dozens of personal appearances in various bookstores and in response to letters from our readers. So here goes, on behalf of Danny and The Jewish News. How did you two get together and how did you get the idea for the book?" - MICHIGAN'S NEWEST ITALIAN RESTAURANT FULL DINNER MENU OPEN DAILY FROM 4 p.m. SUNDAYS FROM 2 p.m. 2380 ORCHARD LAKE ROAD ONE MILE WEST OF TELEGRAPH, SYLVAN LAKE 682-3500 THE FOOD As luck would have it, we met in a kitchen with food talk taking precedence over all else; i.e.: the weather, politics, religion and, sex. A mutual love of good food, travel, the restaurant scene and the frustrations encoun: tered with other eating out guides led to "M, E, & E G D" with its reprints of din- ner menus from the "bet- ter" restaurants in South- eastern Michgian. The whole idea was to create a -hobby" for Mary Conway and thus spare her the boredom of the "Stitch and Bitch" groups. This "hob by" became a full-time busi- ness leading to a completely new, revised edition each year. Our all new 1978 edition is our third book. "Why don't you rate the restaurants?" If, in balance. we do not like a restaurant, it does not RATE a place in "Meet, Eat. & Enjoy Great De- troit". In an average year, in fact, about 75 percent of the places we visit for the first time do not rate a listing due to their very or- dinary (or just plain bad) food, service and atmos- phere. We feel you can rate a meal — that's one thing — but what may be a four-star triumph one day can just as easily turn into a no-star disaster the next time around. The rapid turnover . of chefs and management on the ever-changing restau- rant scene makes the rating game a very risky affair indeed. "What do you do to avoid gaining weight since you eat out so often?" Next question. . Seriously, though, there are a few tricks we've learned to keep the weight factor down to a semi-dull roar: broiled fish is a good indication of a restaurant's culinary abilities and is not fattening (if you skip the tartar sauce). Sharing one salad be- tween the two of us and sampling, not gorging, on each others choices is an- other shortcut to waistline watching as is keeping a - healthy respect for the dam- age an extra roll or Brandy Alexander can do to the bod. It is written up in the 1978 "M, E & E G D" in titillat- ing detail. "How does Detroit com- pare with other cities?" For three years we've been touting Detroit as the NUMBER ONE eating area in the country — consid- ering everything — the number of fine places to eat, extraordinary variety, quality, service, surround- ings, entertainment, great values and the wide area (5,000 plus square miles) where you can meet friends, eat fine food and enjoy our ethnic heritage. And to further underscore our point, James Beard, in a recent Saturday Evening Post article on Detroit res- taurants, was quoted as saying he considers Detroit number three — behind New York and San Fran- cisco. But we still think the Motor City is numero uno. particularly considering (Continued on Page 29) SUNDAY BUFFET FEATURING ALL VARIETIES OF AUTHENTIC CHINESE DISHES ALL YOU CAN ENJOY...FROM 4:30 TO 8 p.m. • Regular menu also aNii Hal& • • Fg roll 35r Pad!
