THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Hadassah Zionist Leader Rose Halprin Dies NEW YORK t JTA — More than 1,000 people filled the Central Synagogue Tuesday to attend the funer- al services of Rose Halprin, who died Sunday at age 82. People form all walks of Jewish and Zionist life came to pay their last re- spects to one of the leading American Zionists. Her body will be flown to Israel where whe will re- ceive a state funeral. Her body will lay in state at Hadassah Medical Center in Ein Karem and then be taken to the courtyard of the Jewish Agency building in Jerusalem where the offi- cial state funeral will take place. She will be buried on the Mount of Olives near the burial site of Henrietta Szold, the founder of Hadas- sah. In 1946, Mrs. Halprin was elected to the Executive of the Jewish Agency for Pa- lestine. In 1947, when the Jewish Agency-American Section was authorized to represent the Jewish case for Palestine before the United Nations in New YOrk, Mrs. Halprin partici- pated actively in national and international negotia- tions leading to the estab- lishment of the state of Is- rael. She served on the execu- tive of the Jewish Agency for more than 20 years and was designated acting chairman of its American Section in 1955, and chair- man in 1960, a position she held until 1968. Mrs. Halprin was also chairman of the Education and Culture Department of the Jewish Agency for the American Section. She was president of Ha- dassah from 1932-34. From 1934 to 1939 she lived with her family in Jerusalem, when she was liaison be- tween Hadassah in the United States and in Pales- tine. A member of the build- ing committee of the hospi- tal on -Mount Scopus, Mrs. Halprin was present at its opening in 1939. She was national presi- dent again from 1947-52 and in that capacity dealt with the situation after the War of Independence in 1948 when access to Scopus was cut off. It was during her presidency that the decision was made to open the He- brew University-Hadassah Medical School in tempo- rary quarters. Mrs. Halprin was honor- ary chairman of the World Jewish Congress-American Section, a member of the Zionist General Council fo the World Zionist Organiza- tion (Actions Committee), a member of the Board of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and a lifetime member of the board of the United Jew- ish Appeal. In 1976, she received the Bublik Award from the He- brew University in Jerusa- lem. In- March 1977, she received the honorary de- gree -of Doctor of Jewish Literature from the Horace M. Kallen Center for Jewish Studies. - Mrs. Halprin attended the Teacher's Institute, Jewish Theological Seminary of America, 1912-14, and Hunt- er College 1914-16, 1920-30; and Columbia University 1930-31. According to the New York Times she was a "live- ly disputatious conversa- tionalist" who "was famous for holding her own, in ex- changes with such masters of repartee as Menahem Be- gin, now prime minister of Israel. She was married to Sam- uel Halprin, an importer and lifelong Zionist, who died in 1974. Tributes were issued by scored of leaders of Jewish and Zionist organizaitons. In addition, Kalman Sultanik, executive vice president of the World Confederation of United Zionists, announced that the establishment of a large memorial project to perpetuate the memory of Mrs. Halprin will be pro- posed at the forthcoming meeting of the confer- eation's leadership. The confederation is a non-party Zionist umbrella organization in this country whose major constituents are Hadassah, Bnai Zion and the American league for Israel. Mrs. Halprin was its hon- orary life-president and was one-of the original founders of the World Confederation of General Zionists in 1946 and a driving force behind the reorganizaiton of the confederation in 1958 as the world Zionist body espous- ing the platform of non- affiliation with political par- ties in Irael, Sultanik re- called.
