PLO State Would OK Peacekeeping Forces

WASHINGTON (JTA )-
Rep. Paul Findley (R-Ill. ),
a member of the House In-
ternational Relations Corn-
mittee. said Palestine Lib-
eration Organization leader
Yasir Arafat would accept a
United Nations peace-
keeping force in a Palesti-
nian state.
Findley revealed this
comment in Aswan, Egypt, ,
where he and other 14 mem-
bers of the committee had
met with Egyptian Presi-
dent Anwar Sadat.
Findley and four of the
Congressmen met with Ara-
fat in Damascus last
Thursday. The Illinois Con-
gressman quoted Arafat as
saying, am ready to ac-
cept a peacekeeping force

after the creation of a Pa-
lestinian state in the West
Bank of Jordan and the
Gaza Strip."
Findley said that when
Sadat was told of Arafat's
comments the Egyptian
President replied, "excel-
lent. -
Zbigniew Brzezinski,
-President Carter's national
security adviser, while
saying that the PLO is not
part of the negotiating proc-
ess in the Middle East did
not explicitly rule out the
PLO from future participa-
tion.
Appearing on CBS-TV's
"Face the Nation," Brze-
zinski emphasized that
"moderate Palestinians

WASHINGTON (STA)—
American military sales to
Iran during the last fiscal
year amounted to some $5
billion while arms sales dur-
ing the same period to Saudi
Arabia was around $1 bil-
lion, according to a report
released by a House Inter-
national Relations Com-
mittee survey team which
made a month-long visit a
year ago to a number of
Middle East countries to
study the impact of Ameri-
can arms sales to that area.
The report warned that
the extensive and sophis-
ticated military hardware
in the area would intensify
conflicts that could erupt
between Arab states in the
region if a settlement of the
Arab-Israeli dispute allowed
old intra Arab conflicts to
re-emerge.
The report noted that
while states such as Saudi
Arabia or Kuwait could not
be considered a threat to
Israel, "equipment being
sold in the Persian Gulf
could, under certain cir-
cumstances be transferred
or used in Middle East hos-
tilities."

The Metropolitan Detroit Jewish _ Community Is
Uniquely Privileged That The First and Only

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL CENTER
in America is being built in our midst.

I am happy to announce that because of the
generous response of the Jewish Community we
were able to start construction of the Holocaust
Memorial Center. This historic Holocaust Center is
estimated to cost one million dollars. Close to
one third of this sum has already - been

contributed.

I appeal to all my friends, my Jewish brothers
and sisters to lend a helping hand in order to
complete this most historic project as soon as
possible. Let us make sure that we and the world
will never let the cry of our six million Martyrs be
forgotten.

mate resolution" of the
Arab-Israeli conflict.
He described "moderate"
to mean willing to partici-
pate in the negotiating proc-
ess on the same basis as all
other participants, including
acceptance of United Na-
tions Security Council Reso-
lutions 242 and 338 as well
as all the progress that has
already been made by the
participants.
A delegation of Palesti-
nian-Americans in Beirut,
headed by Wayne State Uni-
versity Associate Professor
Abdullah Wajih, said they
accept Sadat's proposal that
Americans of Palestinian
origin represent Palesti-
nians at Arab-Israel peace
talks.
Meanwhile, a moderate
PLO official appears to
have been the target of ex-
tremists within the terrorist
organization. Said_ Ham-
mami, PLO spokesman in
Britain, was shot and killed
in his London office last
week-by four men.
The PLO blamed "Zion-
ists - for the murder, but
Scotland Yard and Israeli
sources suspect PLO ex-
tremists.
Israeli officials, mean-
while, revealed that two ter-
rorist gangs were appre-
hended shortly before
Sadat's visit to Jerusalem in
November.

AND HELP

Secure in a meaningful
way the memory of our
murdered people, com-
munities, and culture
anzl the lessons of the
Holocaust.

To permit the murder of six million Jews and
millions of non-Jews by the Nazis to be forgotten
would serve the objectives of the murderers and
be an offense to the memory of the murdered.
Not to perpetuate the memory of our murdered
people in an institutional manner is to help the
murderers eradicate the traces of their monstrous

crimes.

The Holocaust Memorial Center will serve not only as a reminder of the life
and martyrdom of the European Jewish Community, but also as a living

testimony to the society of mankind what man can and did do to his fellow
men when democratic checks and balances are denied to a given society.

Thousands of Jewish communities ; six million of our fathers and mothers,
brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, perished in the gas chambers of
Nazi Germany. The Nazis in their bestial design not only snuffed out the
lives of our dear and near ones but also denied any trace of their where-
abouts in death. In this Holocaust Memorial Center the European Jewish
communities and the six million Jews will find a living expression through
which the story and lessons of the Holocaust will be integrated into our lives.
