JOY DELTA THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Seek Court Suit to Add Qualified Jews to NY Police NEW YORK (JTA)—An official of a national organi- zation of Jewish police said the organization is consid- ering a court suit to assure appointment of qualified -Jewish applicants to the po- lice force in Nassau County on Long Island. • Louis Weiser, , executive vice president of the Nation- al Conference of Shomrim Societies, said the Justice Department has issued' an executive order to the Nas- sau County Police Depart- ment requiring "affirmative action" in hiring of addition- al police. Weiser said that the order specifically ex- ludes Jews as a minority. The order came after the Nassau Police Commission- er, Daniel Guidor aimoimced last July that he Wanted to make the department more representative "of the com- munity it serves" in start- ing a campaign to recruit minority group members and women for the force. The commissioner also said an effort would be made to attract Jewish ap- paants for the 3,800-mem- ber force. A department spokesman said then that 54 police were black, 55 were Jews and 26 were women. The Nassau County Plan- ning Commission reported then that about five percent of the county's 1.45 million residents were blacks. The Long Island chapter of the: American Jewish Com- mittee said about, one-third of the country's residents were Jews. Rhodes Sephardim Topic of Volume NEW YORK—Rabbi Marc D.
