Singer Inspired
by Sadat, Begin

NEW YORK—Inspired by
the peace efforts of Israeli
Prime Minister Menahem
Begin and Egyptian Presi-
dent Anwar Sadat, Ameri-
can folk rock singer Richie
Havens has composed a
song. written in English, He-
brew and Arabaic that's al-
ready been marked as a
"hit" in Israel, with release
in Egypt soon.
The refrain in the black
singer's song is as follows.:
"Shalom, shalom alei-
chem, salaam, salaam alei-
kurn." The phrases mean
peace upon you.

Peace after enmity is
sweeter than sweetness.

Begin Prefers
Sephardi Leader

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Pre-
mier Menahem Begin re-
portedly plans to nominate
a Sephardi for president to
succed Ephraim Katzir,
who has announced he will
not seek re-election when
his five-year term ends in
May.
Begin asked Katzir to stay
on, but the President, a
biophysicist, wants to return
to the Weizmann Institute of
Science at Rehovot.
Among those reportedly
being considered by Begin
are Supreme Court Justice
Eliahu Many ; Democratic
Movement for Change MK
Stunuel Toledano, who was
for many years the official
advisor on Arab affairs un-
der Labor governments;
Dr. Andre Chouraqui, a Mo-
roccan-born scholar and au-
thor, and Labor MK Yitzhak
Navon, who narrowly lost
out to Katzir five years ago.
The Liberal Party, one of
the two major parties in
Likud, is pressing the candi-
dacy of one of its leaders,
Dr. Elimelekh Rimalt.
