Paul Johnson, in

condition to the poor eco-
nomic state of the country
and the rampant illiteracy.
As an example, he asked in
his hotel how to get to the
Cairo synagogue. When giv-
en the address and directed
to a taxi, Shenkman found
his driver- was illiterate and
the driver had to ask direc-
tions from several people
before arriving at their un-
planned destination—an
Anglican church.

Asked how it was that his
radio station was offered
the mission to Egypt,
Shenkman said it came
"through a chain of coinci-
dences."
Shenkman approached
Rabbi Milton Arm of Cong.
Beth Achim if he would do
an interview on the Shenk-
man program since he was-
in Israel at the time of the
first Sadat initiative.- How-
ever, Rabbi Arm left before
Sadat's arrival. He sugges-
ted Shenkman speak to
Michigan Congressman
James Blanchard who wit- -
nessed the historic event.
-Through Blanchard's of-
fice, with the cooperation of
the Egyptian Embassy in
Washington, Shen man was
able to obtain the per-
mission to visit Egypt dur-
ing the Begin visit.
