And the shindig last week was of their best. About 2,000 happy people gathered at the Roostertail, owned by the Schoenith family, for their W.D. Gale and affiliates holiday fun- fest. Tom, who was in charge of the affair, is president of Gale, and brother Lee is chairman of the board ... Many folks will remember when the Roostertail was opened in 1958 by their fa- ther, Joe, now retired. Being in the surroundings of this landmark restaurant and cocktail lounge brought back fond memories ... of the doors opening to a breathless public who were consumed as much by cu- riosity as by hunger. The opening, accom- panied by much fanfare and RAGE CO GRAND OPENING Steaks • Seafood • Salads • • Pizza • Italian Specialties • Stacked Sandwiches OPEN SEVEN DAYS: FOR • LUNCH-• DINNER • AFTER THEATER MON. thru THURS., 11 SAT., 12 noon a.m. to 11 p.m. FRI., 11 to 12 Mid. Buy one dinner, receive one "compliments of ► the house" ALL MAJOR CREDIT CARDS HONORED celebration, was easily the most talked- and speculat- ed-about event in Detroit's then recent restaurant his- tory. It was understood then that Joe would spare no expense in bringing Detroit a showplace deserving of national attention. We attended the opening and were properly im- pressed ... The location was ideal, at the foot of Marquette, next to Water Works Park. Thousands flocked to the Roostertail those first few weeks ... It was a fantastic turnout, undoubtedly more than the Schoeniths had been prepared for. Like any new enterprise of its size, there were some mistakes and a lot of people went away mad. Frequently the service and the food were indiffer- ent. The prices were, at first, too high. After the initial season, things got on an even keel and began to run as smooth- ly as one of the famed Schoenith powerboats. HERE WE WERE AGAIN ... this time at an- other wonderful celebration .. and among the fine time had d by all, was the discov- ery of an outstanding en- tertainer who people know little about ... so far, that is. His name is Paul Loch- richio and you won't believe he has never taken a singing lesson ... or has been warbl- ing and gyrating only three years ... a real natural tal- ent. The audience was spellbound as Paul sang from the dramatic setting rigged up by Tom ... high on a steel scaffold with bright lights and a big white spotlight emphasizing his shadow upon a screen be- hind. Paul sang, moved in great rhythm, and did remarkable impressions of Neil Dia- mond, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Johnny Mathis and others ... even though he hasn't worked hard at doing this sort of thing ... Being a personality entertainer all his own is a very fine asset as his regular singing and movements seem to blend the accomplishments of many super stars molded into one body. Paul's excellent poise and presentation certainly belies the fact that he has only been singing three years. If this isn't honest-to-good- ness, truly imbedded natu- ral talent, we don't know what is.
