While they extend the amount of quiet or "passive" sleep, they reduce the amount of "active", or deep sleep and are likely to leave the person sluggish when he wakes us. "A similar feeling occurs from oversleeping", says the Bar-Ilan professor. Just like overeating, it creates an imbalance between what the body needs and what it gets. Finally, Prof. LeWin recommends against waking up in the middle of a dream (if you can help it), since dreams occur during "active" sleep, thus leaving the sleeper with a bad feeling and much difficulty in falling asleep again. The Jewish News Special Israel Correspondent _TEL AVIV—In a quiet rustic area, far from dynamic Israel, among 800 meter-high mountains, a new - Jewish settlement, Migdal Oz (Strong Fortress), has been established. The settlement was founded by young people of the religious Bnei Akiva movement. There was no 'advance publicity when they began the settlement; they simply set up camp and the building began. The new kibutz will be an important security link in the Etzion block in Judea, not far from Hebron. It was here that Jewish settlements were occupied and destroyed by the Jordanian Arab Legion in the 1948 Israel War of Independence. Since the Six Day War of June 1967, five Jewish settlements have been established in the area, started mostly by children of the original settlers. The new settlements today, however, are still located near densely populated Arab areas, and it is believed that if what happened in 1948 is to be avoided, more Jewish settlements must be established in the 40-kilometer strip between Jerusalem and Hebron. The settlers have to face a great many difficulties, however. The earth is hard and stony, but the settlers will get fields nearby for agricultural use. They intend to establish a chicken farm and light industry on the kibutz. In the meantime, they already have electricity and a security' fence. The young settlers of Migdal Oz are confident of their future and look to success. They have Already succeeded in fostering good relations with their Arab neighbors. The inhabitants of the nearby Arab village of Bet Fajr wished the new Jewish settlement success. The country is large, the Arabs told them, and there is room for all who wish to work and build. The Arabs stressed the importance of friendly relations. The inhabitants of Bet Fajr recalled the destruction of the Jewish settlements in the Etzion block in 1948: They blamed the British Mandatory authorities for the tragedy, whom they claim incited the Arabs against the Jews. The settlers of Migdal Oz say they are not entirely confident in the assurance and wishes of their Arab neighbors, and they are aware of the wid campaign against establishment of Jewis settlements in the Etzion area. They also accept the fact that it may take years until their Arab neighbors will learn to accept the existence of a neighboring Jewish settlement. The Jewish settlers believe, however, that with .attempts at good will, understanding and mutual tolerance, the mountainous area between Jerusalem and Hebron can be resettler, renewed and developed by Jewish youth. 4 • 4.1 I I 4
