Mecca Pilgrims Face Horrible Conditions

2 Saturday Torah Readings

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1977, JTA, Inc.)

The Torah scroll is read
in the synagogue on
'Saturday afternoon after
it had already been read
on Saturday morning.
This is considered to be
one of the 10 decrees or-
dained by Ezra the Scribe
(Talmud, Baba Kama
82a). Originally it was not
required; but Ezra or-
dained that it be done for
the 'sake of the many
people who were unable
to -attend the synagogue

daily, and especially on
Monday and Thursday
mornings when the scroll
is customarily read.
The extra reading on
Saturday afternoon gave
these people at least one
more reading session
to make up for the two
weekly readings that
they missed. It also made
them cognizant of the
fact that the involvement
of the Jew and the Torah
was not a "once-a-week"
affair, but rather a con-
stant ongoing relation-
ship.

TEL AVIV—Egyptian
journalist Fatme Affar
wrote in the Egyptian daily
Zaboh el Hir" (Good
Morning) about the terrible
conditions on the
pilgrimage to Mecca.
Fatme depicts her
sufferings from the
moment she arrived at
Jedda airport. The
taxi-driver demanded $300
for the fare. There is no set
tariff. The driver dropped
Fatme and her husband 200
metres from their hotel.
There was no porter.
A year-ago she paid $18
per night for, the room.
This time $108 was
demanded for the same
room. They had no other
choice and she declared
their readiness to pay this
price.
In the morning the hotel
looked like a battlefield.
People slept in every free
corner. Pe-ople_ lay in all
corridors and washrooms.
There was no waiter in
the hotel to bring a cup of
water, which cost as much

as a glass of wine. Food
was more expensive than in
the best hotels in Europe.
Hundreds of poor pilgrims
were lying about in the
streets. The money they
took with them for a stay
of 10 days was hardly
enough for a stay of four
days.
The employees of the
Arab airlines were rude.
When she asked to book a
plane seat, the employee
threw the ticket in her face
and said: "Come again in
four days."
The pilgrimage to Mecca
is an obligation for every
Moslem. A Moslem is
ready to forfeit the most
necessary need in order to
fulfill the holy duty and go
for a pilgrimmage to
Mecca.
If such horrible
conditions existed for a
pilgrimage to Jerusalem,
the whole world would
criticize Israel. Meanwhile,
the Arabs, with their
immense oil riches, cannot
•organize the pilgrimmage
to Mecca and maintain
humane conditions for the
pilgrims.
The pilgrimmage to
Mecca can take place only
within two months and 10
days during the year. Once
Moslems walked for days
and nights from other
countries to Mecca or rode
on mules. Many died in the

Dayan Expected
to Visit Vatican
on Italy Trip

NEW YORK — NBC
news and Vatican sources
in Rome expect that Israeli
Foreign Minister Moshe
Dayan will meet with Pope
Paul VI in January when
Dayan visits Italy.
Vatican sources are
hoping to become a party
to an international accord
defining the status of the
holy places in Jerusalem
with Israel's cooperation.
The New York Times
said that a proposed
meeting between Dayan
and the Pope is a signal of
improving Israeli-Vatican
relations.
The Vatican sources say
that Pope Paul has
retreated from the stance
of Pope Pius XII
demanding full
internationalization of Holy
Land shrines.
Meanwhile, there was
continuing speculation in
Israel over the unexplained
disappearance of Dayan
following the Ismailiya
summit meeting on Sunday
and Monday. Dayan missed
Tuesday's meeting of the
Israeli Cabinet.
Various rumors said that
Dayan and Prime Minister
Menahem Begin were at
odds over Begin's peace
plan, that Dayan was
meeting with King Hussein
of Jordan or with other
Arab leaders, possibly in
Morocco. A Foreign
Ministry spokesman said
Dayan was -busy."

In spite of the terrible
conditions. more than a
million pilgrims journeyed
to Mecca during the last
two years.

desert. Now they can come
in ships and planes.
Saudi authorities have
built some sanitary
facilities against cholera
and other diseases for the
pilgrims. They have
announced that they would
build modern hotels,
motels, restaurants and
rest-places for poor
pilgrims. But nothing came
out of it.
