tion at 5249 Jos. Campau in
Hamtramck since 1909.
In 1909, Stanley Grend-
zinski and his wife moved
their shoe store from Can-
field and Dubois to Jos.
Campau and Frederick, in
those days one of Detroit's
elegant neighborhoods.
The shoe store didn't do
too well, so Stanley opened
a restaurant and saloon ...
The business flourished un-
til Prohibition.
Honest Stanley would not
violate the law of his
adopted land so he leased
the place to some opportu-
nistic scalawag who ran the
place as a "speak" during
those trying years.
In the meantime, Stanley
and his: wife died, and the
second generation took over
the operation of the Ivanhoe
... Stanley Sienkiewicz, a
son-in-law, and the Grend-
zinski's daughter, Agnes,
are today's proprietors.
The "fish place" is well-
named because fish is the
specialty ... Pan-fried perch
that fairly melts in your
mouth (if we may borrow a
well-worn phrase), gained
the Ivanhoe a city-wide rep-
utation.
If your manual dexterity
is of a high quotient then
you will have no trouble
skimming the bones out of
the tender white meat ... If
it isn't, a waitress will be
glad to do it for you.
