`Gates of Understanding' Guides Worshippers,
Serves as Students'Manual of Reform Judaism

"Gates of Under-
standing" is a definitive
book supplementing the
impressiveness of the new
Reform Prayer Book and
defining the messages of
prayer.
Published by the Union of
American Hebrew
Congregations, edited by
Lawrence A. Hoffman, this
volume contains a series of
essays defining prayer,
guiding the worshipper,
serving also as an
important textbook for
students who are immersed
in learning about the
synagogue worship.

The text includes essays
by noted scholars of former
generations, including Dr.
Kaufmann Kohler, an early
rabbi of Detroit's Temple
Beth El.
The essay by Dr. Joseph

Gutmann backs his
contention up with quotes
from ancient rabbinic
authorities, and cites past
examples of Jewish art,
such as the Third Century
synagogue paintings of
Dura-Europos.
"Our task in using art,
whether in prayerbooks or
in the synagogue proper
should be, ideally speaking,
no different from the task
of our forefathers, -
Gutmann says. "We too,
through art wish to convey
meaningfully and
aesthetically the collective

of the elementary school
curriculum. Although
Arabic is presently taught
in many schools, many
others do not offer it and
students prefer to study
French as a foreign
language.
The Piamenta committee
attributed this in part to
the poor quality of Arabic
teachers and the Education
Ministry plans to make a
special effort to improve
teacher training.
Another recommendation
calls for the use of
instructional television to
teach Arabic. At present
only English lessons are
given on educational
television.
The panel proposed that
the study of Arabic start at
the fourth grade level and
be limited at the first stage
to the spoken language.
There is considerable
difference between spoken
and written Arabic.

Alexander Grass was

At the same time, UJA

president of the fund. The
dinner meeting concluded
three days of briefings on

Century Reform Jewish
communities."
Gutmann also maintains
that the creation — or the
recreation — of sacred
Jewish art must seek new
avenues of interpretation.
"Intelligent confrontation
and dialogue must begin, -
Gutmann says. "Such a
confrontation demands, of
course, a creative search
on the part of the rabbi to
develop a meaningful
theology and to
communicate it to the
artist, so that the artist can
effectively translate
abstract ideas into
beautiful concrete forms —
forms that will not offend
the eye with crude
cheapness or a harping on
nostalgic pieties, but
instead will stimulate
awareness and discovery of
a faith still very much
alive."

Man

Every plant and bush,
every grain of sand and clod
of earth, everything in
which life is revealed or hid-

biggest in creation — all
longs and yearns and
reaches out toward its
celestial source. And at
every moment, all these
cravings are gathered up

is himself lifted up by the
longing for holiness within
him. It is during prayer that
all these pent-up desires and

Through his prayer man
