Women Voted Aliyot at Baltimore
Traditional Conservative Synagogue

One of the oldest tradi-
tional synagogues in the
land, 106-year-old Conserva-
tive Chizuk Amuno Congre-
gation of Baltimore, voted
to assign aliyot to women.
Rabbi Maurice S. Corson
is spiritual leader.
The set of new regulations
inaugurated by Chizuk Am-
uno are:
• Women will be included
as part of our minyan at
any service held in or under
he auspices of the Chizuk
Amuno Congregation.
• Effective immediately,
all Bnot Mitzva will be in-
vited and encouraged to ac-
cept an aliya on the Shabat
morning immediately fol-
lowing their Bat Mitzva,
This honor will be for the
brahot recitation before
and after the reading of the
Torah.
• Women with requisite
background will be included
equally with men during the
ritual of the Shabat morning
services. This will be done
for the first time on Feb. 11,

on the occasion of Sister-
hood Shabat. Thereafter, on
each Shabat morning, one
reading aliya, calling one to
the Torah for recitation of
the brahot and one non-
reading aliya will be re-
served for qualified women.
Their selection will be de-
termined by the profes-
sional staff.

• All married women ac-
corded the honor of an aliya
will be required to have a
head covering. For this rea-
son, all married women will
be encouraged to have a
head covering any time they
attend services. The congre-
gation will provide chapel
veils for those who do not
have a head covering. It is
not mandatory for unmar-
ried women to have head
coverings. All Bat Mitzva
girls will be encouraged to
have a head covering during
their participation in the
service.

to the New York State Advi-
sory Council on Education
for Title IV Funding for a
three-year term.

walds' synagogue," because
of the pioneering leadership
in the congregation of the
world famous Frieden-
walds, the family of noted
ophthalmologists.
