The new program requires a commitment to nine hours of study in blocks of three consecutive hours. It places a premium on self-study with peers under the immediate supervision of a rabbi. This " havruta " method, the traditional mode of study in men's yeshivot, has been tested in non-credit study at Stern College and has now been integrated into the regular college programs for the study of both Talmud and Humash by women. According to Rabbi Saul Berman, chairman of Stern College's Department of Judaic Studies, 65 women on three levels — elementary, intermediate, and advanced—have registered for this new bet midrash option. Five or six hours will be devoted to "shiur" (lecture) and three or four to "havruta" (small group study under faculty supervision). Alignment MK Gad Yaacobi said there was no justification in trying to "buy off" returning Israelis with material bait. The 300,000 Israelis now living abroad will not come back because of material benefits, but rather as a result of "a basic Zionist conviction," he declared. All the speakers criticized the bureaucracy involved in absorbing immigrants. The subject of aliya was also dealt with at a press conference by Mordehai Bar-On, chairman of the World Zionist Organization Youth and Hehalutz Department. He said that in 28 Jewish communities in the United States, in which more than 2.5 million Jews live, Stern College Bet Midrash in Talmud for Women Begun DRAPERY CLEANERS • returning to Israel. Levi announced that the Housing and Construction Ministry agreed to begin immediately to purchase second-hand apartments for the use of elderly immigrants. Likud faction chairman, Avraham Sharir, suggested that Israel's 30th anniversary be designated as the year of peace and immigration. He warned that without massive immigration the Jewish population in Israel faced the danger of becoming a minority even in this generation. The natural growth of the Arab population in Israel is three times larger than of the Jewish population, he said. Sharir noted there was I 543-66001 ...Si 5 OFF COUPON.... NEW YORK (ZINS)—The story of the "Syrian brides" who were allowed to leave Syria to marry in the U.S. has not been repeated. Syrian authorities have not allowed_ any other Jewish girls to leave the country to marry, and the girls themselves, according to a Sephardic rabbi in New York, are reluctant to leave. "Those who came here like America, but miss their parents," said Rabbi Hecht of Cong. Shaarey Zion in Brooklyn.
