Researchers Conclude Homebound Women More Neurotic

TEL AVIV — A research
project undertaken by a
team of researchers from
Tel Aviv University for the
Institute of Applied Social
Research analyzes the fac-
tors that influence women's
ability to adjust to the
demands, of their environ-
ment, such as coping with
loved ones and work, and
meeting their physical, psy-
cho-social, and sociocul-
tural needs.

Weizman

(Continued from Page 6 )

army radio reporter said
Sadat told him at Ismailia
that he and Weizman had
discussed in "broad terms"
questions relating to a com-
prehensive settlement. He
said Sadat emphasized
"broad terms."
Sources associated with
both the Israeli and Egyp-
tian negotiating teams in
Cairo indicated that the sur-
prie visit of Weizman
means that substantive
talks on basic issues of ter-
ritory and security in Sinai
are underway.
According to some
sources, these talks are in-
tended to prepare the
ground for a joint declara-
tion by Sadat and Begin on
Sunday. They are expected
to announce the principles
of an Israeli-Egyptian set-
tlement in Sinai. That would
ensure that the Sadat-Begin -
summit meeting ends on a
high note.
The Cairo Conference is
expected to be raised to the
foreign ministers level im-
mediately afterwards to
work out details of the terri-
torial-security aspects of a
settlement as well as the
"nature of peace" clauses.
The fourth session of the
Cairo conference was can-
celled while Ben-Elissar
met with Weizman in Is-
‘=„lia.
High-level Egyptian
sources indicated that a
wide gap still exists be-
tween Israel and Egypt on
the issue of Israeli evac-
uation of Sinai. The sources
said that Egypt would not
tolerate the presence of a
single Israeli soldier in
qinai after a settlement is
fined. One source close to
(-----.5adat was reported to have
remarked privately that any
Israeli need to maintain an
air or naval garrison at
Sharm El-Sheikh would
"disappear" the moment a
settlement is achieved.
The source said that the
hard-line Arab states would
quickly fall in line bahind
Egypt so that Israel would
have no cause to fear the-
possibility of new blockade
of the strategic Straits of
Tiran. The source also re-
ferred to Yamit and El Ar-
ish in northern Sinai as
places Israel would have to
vacate under an agreement.

a study interviewing 313
Israeli women, 89 of whom
had been referred to mental
health clinics by their doc-
tors. Many of the women
were of low socio-economic
background, of Asian-Afri-
can origin, and half of them
had three children or more.
The study revealed that
women in long-term care at
mental health clinics tend to
develop a dependence on the
clinics rather than learning
how to deal constructively
with their roles at home and
in the community. These
women do not tend to dis-
cuss problems with their
husbands in times of tension
and nervousness.
Moreover, it was found

that the less they speak with
their husbands, the less they
interact with others-- both
family and outsiders. The
lower the woman's educa-
tional level, the less she
tends to discuss problems
with her husband, the
researchers concluded.
The researchers found
that women who work out-
side the home are more
likely to discuss problems
with their husbands (if they
feel that their husbands
approve of their working),
and are more independent
of their husbands and
agencies in solving financial
problems.
Working women were
found to be better able_ to

cope with their role as
housewives, while women
who do not work outside the
home complained that they
have too much work and
that their children do not
help them. The higher the
woman's educational level,
the more likely she is to
work outside the home.
The study concluded that
working outside the home is
equivalent to coping with
the secondary environ-
ment's demands and is
related to the ability to cope
with the demands of the
household and family. It
further suggested that men-
tal health clinics encourage
women to work outside the
home as a means of learn-

We're open Monday.

...and boy! have
we got a surprise
for you.

There's something big
(and very exciting)
happening at Osmuns, but
we can't tell you the good
news in public. Actually,
we mailed the good news
out in private last week.
But if somehow it got lost
in the holiday crush, all is
not lost. Just phone any
Osmuns store and say:
"I could use some good
news, Osmuns. Tell me!
Tell me!" Or repeat same
in person. All Osmuns
stores are open Monday
from 12 'til 5. And every
one-has a dandy surprise
inside.
