44 Friday, December 23, 1977 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 41 Catholic Priest Defends Jews Detroiter Dr. Clara Raven recently received a letter from a friend — a Catholic priest — who applauded Egypt's recent peace moves, Israel and the Jews. The letter, from Father J.G. Gilbride, stated in part: "Regarding Israel and Egypt. I think that Egypt is smart in realizing that she'd better make peace with Is- rael. Egypt is one Arab na- tion that knows that if an all-out war comes to try and wipe out Israel the whole Christian community of na- tions will be on Israel's side, for the simple and com- manding fact of civilization, that spiritually we Chris- tians are Jews! "They gave us, after cen- turies of suffering and dying, our belief in the one true God; and the Arabs (at least I am convinced that Egyptian Arabs) know that we owe that debt of grat- itude to the Jews! "Recently I was speaking before a group of clergy — of rabbis, priests, and Prot- estant ministers and law- yers — and I put great emphasis on this point, also! So I hope and pray that the God-damned Jew- haters here in America do not stick their dirty minds in the negotiations, and so destroy this blessing of peace between Israel and Egypt!"
