Religious Jewish women
_refrain from doing certain
work on the first day of the
Hebrew month (i.e. weav-
ing, - sewing, etc.) because
initially, the first of the
month had the character of
a holiday. A holy day is
characterized by refraining
from labor on that day.

Today this characteristic is
observed by the women of
the Jewish home.
The reason given is that it
was the women who refused
to contribute their jewelry
to the making of the Golden
Calf. Perhaps if their ex-
ample had been followed
later, Jerusalem might not
have been destroyed.
They are therefore sin-
gled out for their steadfast-
ness by having them refrain
from work on the first of the
month (Rosh Hodesh) to
serve as a model of faith for
all Israel in the future.
