Tribute to a Man Committed to Charity
ample of generosity and has
spurred and stirred others
to imitate him.
Chaim Herzog will be
coming to Florida to join in
the salute to Sam and his
wife, Celia. Perhaps Herzog
can persuade his new-found
friend, the Ambassador of
Egypt, to join him.
Now 75, Goldfarb has
once more enunciated his
credo—"Remember: Not
what one has, but what one
gives is the only true meas-
ure of the quality of a per-
son."
The Goldfarb statement is
exhilarating. Here is part of
it: "Six days after Pearl
Harbor, when I was 39
years old, my- doctor or-
dered me to leave New
York City and move to Flor-
ida. I did not expect to
reach the age of 45. Now in
my 75th year, I can, with a
heart full of gratitude and
humility, report that I have
fortunately overcome two
serious coronaries and four
major operations, including
cancer of the colon and a
paralytic stroke.
"I attribute my good for-
fune for the past 36 years to
my magnificent obses-
sion...the UJA. I became a
charter member in 1939. My
fanatical devotion to that
cause has served as a life
saver for me. For 39 years,
I have felt that the holiest
obligation in the life of a
Jew_ was to give a max-
imum gift each year to the
UJA. As long as I do so, I
shall never have a fear of
dying.
"The single most grat-
ifying deed in my life was
when after the concentra-
tion camps were opened in
1946, I gave $50,000 (25 per-
cent of my entire net worth)
-
to UJA.
"There are many Jews
who find no fulfillment in
their lives. They play golf,
cards and pursue pleasure
in all forms. They try- to
escape from the -shallow-
ness which accrues to those
blind to the job of giving
adequately. God help all
those derelict in their holy
obligation to begin giving
the maximum to UJA for as
along as they live.
"For years, those aware
of my hypertension and
coronaries believed it was
due to my relentless striv-
ing to help make a better
world. There is some - truth
in that observation. When I
am called by the Grim Rea-
per, I hope my children will
remember to say: He wore
himself out in pursuit of
worthy, even though unat-
tainable ends. But in so
doing, learned of ecstacy in
giving and living."
