Abe Margolies is a well- known character around New York City, now noted for his philanthropic en- deavors. In his youth Abe thought of himself as a pretty classy high school basketball player. He was offered a scholarship of sorts to St. John's Univer- sity, but couldn't accept it because he didn't have the carfare to make the round trip. He is now president of a nationally recognized jew- elry firm and owns Abe's Steakhouse in Manhattan. Abe is scheduled to be honored_by the Friends of Hebrew University, with all proceeds to go toward schol- arships in the name of the 11 Israeli athletes who were killed in Munich. Late – in January, the Max Kase Bnai Brith Sports Lodge will have Abe as its guest and "Man of the Year." One of Abe's customers a few years ago was Tom Hoover, who put in a stint with the New York Knicks as a center. Abe and Hoover began arguing about basket- ball, as is the wont when old timers get together with younger former players, and Abe came out with the amazing statement, "Even at my age 'right now I can beat you at 21" (a game which consists of matching set shots from different po- sitions on the court.) Hoover, who stands 6'10" to Abe's barely 5'8", looked down at the "aging" veter- an in amazement and said, "Man, you must have lost your marbles. You are go- ing to beat me in shooting?" "Yes," Abe replied. "Let's get a basketball and I will show you right now that I am a better man than you are at 21." The next scene takes WHAT'S THE MOST FUN YO N HAVE NEXT TO" TERDAYS"? L.J. After finding a neighbor- hood court, Abe, who wears thick spectacles, turned to Hoover and said, "Come on out to the middle and point me to the basket, I am taking my glasses off." You may have guessed the conclusion of this in- cident. What happened was that Abe kept making his outside set shot, hitting one after the other to. the con- sternation of Hoover. Hoo- ver, at 6'10" is used to play- ing under the basket, and Abe insisted on keeping him outside, and consequently, he ran off 21 points on the ex-All-American from Villa- nova in a short period of time. The secretary of the Max Kase Sports Lodge, Max Taub, was Abe's book- keeping teacher at James Monroe High School and he also coached basketball. He told me that when Abe first reported to him for basket- ball practice he asked an- other player, "What's that set shooter's name? I don't have him on my list." It seems that Abe was peppering the basket from all angles and Coach Taub was very much impressed. The kid answered, "That's Abe Blinder." When the players lined up to get their equipment, Taub yelled, "Abe Blinder, up forward." Nobody re- sponded. Max looked at JNF Gets Orders for Cypress Trees. From Christians JERUSALEM (JTA)— The Jewish National Fund has received a number of orders for cypress trees, which serve as Christmas trees in Israel, from foreign newsmen stationed in Israel who are now covering the Cairo conference, among them representatives of the three large American TV networks. A pair of cypress trees have been placed at the good fence on the Lebanese border to supply Christmas trees to the population in south Lebanon, diplomats, UN officials and foreign newsmen. Margolies and said, "Hey, I am talking to you. Isn't your name Abe Blinder?" Abe answered, "No, Coach. My name is Abe Margolies. The guys call be Abe the Blinder because of my eye glasses."
