Shenkmans Dedicate Club Room

Words mean different
things to different people.
An old story kept coming in
my mind the other day, em-
phasizing the point. It hap-
pened some 40 years ago to
my friend, Julius Haber, a
businessman.
When Haber became a Zi-
onist, he made Zionism his
business. He wasn't satis-
fied to sing Hatikva. He
went to Jerusalem and
sought to make a practical
contribution to the rebuild-
ing of the reborn city. He
knew something about the
moving pictute business and
decided to give Jerusalem
its first moving picture
house.
Haber looked around and
finally found an old run-
down building which, with
some rebuilding, he thought,
might be made into • a pic-
ture house. He went to see
the-Arab owner to negotiate
for its purchase.
The Arab owner was most
gracious, inviting Haber to
join him at a nearby cafe
where they sat down to
drink coffee.
Haber told the owner
what he had in mind. If the
price was suitable, they
could make a deal.
"You want it," said the
Arab, "it is yours. Let us
have some coffee."
Haber was impressed.
The Arabs, he concluded,
were-- truly hospitable, not
greedy like other people
who can only think in terms
of dollars and cents. Haber
responded to the mood by
asking some friendly ques-
tions about --the owner and
his family. The Arab an-
swered with a lengthy spiel.
He originally came from
Iraq, he said, but he had -a
cousin who used to feed his
goats around the area
where the city of Tel Aviv
now stood.
Yes, said Haber, and both
agreed that Tel Aviv was
quite a town now. Then Ha-

her returned to his oriffinal
question. "How much did
you want for the building?"
"Why talk about price,"
said the Arab again. "You
want it, it is yours. Let us
have more coffee."
They had more coffee.
The Arab asked Haber
about Ainerica. He said he
had a relative who had gone
to Chicago, but he wasn't
sure where he was now.
Maybe in New York. Maybe
in Pants-sylvania. Pennsyl-
vania, Haber corrected.
This cousin, the Arab said,
was always moving about.
When he seemed through
talking about the cousin,
Haber in a hushed voice this
time again asked, "What
about telling me how much
you want for the building."
Again, "You want it. It is
yours." And again there
was more coffee.

Finally, it was midnight.
He would stand no more
coffee and no more, "You
want it, it is yours." "My
friend," said Haber, "I have
to get some sleep. What is
the price? I am leaving."
Haber then got the answer
and he almost fell into a fit.
On Broadway they would
not have asked such a high
price!
Yes, words mean differ-
ent things to different
people. I think the story has
some point now that there
are negotiations with the
Arabs.

There is a story they used
to tell about an old Arab in
JeruSalem who, lying in
bed,' was disturbed by the
noise his children made. To
get them out of the house,
he told them that downtown
the businessmen were dis-
tributing gifts. The children
immediately took off for
downtown. After a while,
the old Arab thought to him-
self. "Here I am lying in
.bed, when the businessmen
are Oving . away things. He
immediately dressed and
went downtown himself.

TEL AVIV (ZINS)—The
newspaper Haaretz believes
one of the following min-
isters will succeed Men-
ahem Begin if he decides to
step down as premier and
succeed Israeli President
Ephraim Katzir:
They are Finance Min-
ister Simha Ehrlich, De-
fense Minister Ezer , Weiz-
man, Vice Premier Yigael
Yadin, Foreign Minister
Moshe Dayan and Justice
Minister Shmuel Tamir.

Industrialization (A0I) and -
G.•. Jefferson, chairman of
the British Aerospace Dy-
namics group.
It calls for the production
to be progressively trans-
ferred from British to Egyp-
tian factories, undertaken
by a newly-formed joint
company called Arab-Brit-
ish Dynamics Limited, in
which AOI will have '70 per-
cent and British Aerospace
30 percent.
The board will consist of
six Arab directors, includ-
ing chairman and three
British.
The deal is seen here as a
part of Egyptian President
Anwar Sadat's strategic'
plans to break away from
the Egyptian armed forces'
dependence on Soviet mili-
tary hardware.
