The Jewish Community Council Is Defended

Editor, The Jewish News:
I take umbrage at the
mainly unsubstantiated and
opinionated statements

made by Dr. Steinhardt in
his letter published on Dec.
2 criticizing the Jewish
Community Council.

The Delegate Assembly
is, indeed, consulted on sig-
nificant issues, and votes
are taken after discussions.
You must keep in mind that
during one evening when
the Assembly has much
business and only 2 or 2 1/2
hours of time, there is never
enough time for everything
to be thrashed through.

too long ago, and was im-
pressed with the openness,
frankness and constructive
deliberations of the com-
mittee.
Many names were sugges-
ted because they had been
sent in by delegates and by
other people of good will
who felt certain people
should be considered. It
must be kept in mind that
not everyone can possibly
win a seat on the Council
became there are only a
few empty seats available
to be voted upon, and many
dozens of names must be
considered. The primary
business of the nominating
committee is to select mem-
bers who would be construc-
tive and helpful, not de-
structive or unresourceful.
Certainly it is conceded
that Council could not possi-
bly agree on every issue.
Are there any informed
Jews who always agree on
every issue?

It is categorically in-
accurate to state that "the
administration blocks the
legal constitutional proc-
ess." As far as the
NJCRAC position is
concerned, I have not yet
been able to research this.

I am positive I echo the
stance of the majority of
our citizens when I state
that our Jewish Community
Council is a strongly posi-
tive force in our midst. We
have a fine national reputa-
tion. I categorically state
that the Assemblies do try
as much as time permits to
air all controversial matters
and does strongly encourage
community and delegate
participation.

On the subject of self-
appraisal of the Executive
Board members: this is an
ongoing activity. Each
member and every chair-
person and his or her mem-
bers are continually car-
rying out verbal self-and-
committee appraisal. I am
witness to this because I
have been a member of all
the committees for years.
There are discussions and
deliberations on this as well
as other numerous com-
mitments as they arise.
The charge that the Exec-
utive Board refused to pass
a resolution on.the Rascism
issue was debated at length.
Dr. Steinhardt introduced
the resolution, and the com-
mittee, after lengthy debate
on both sides of the subject,
decided that the U.S. Senate
and numerous periodicals
throughout the land were
doing a better job for us
than we could possibly do
for ourselves. Dr.
Steinhardt continues to be
angry because we didn't
"mind" him.

industry, was given a for-
mal invitation signed by the
European District president
Georges Boch. He has not
yet replied.
Mubarak, who arrived in
Paris Sunday, is due to
meet French President Va-
lery Giscard d'Estaing.
French and Egyptian
sources here say the two
are due to examine the pos-
sibility of French guaran-
tees to an eventual peace
agreement in the Middle
East.
Egypt is interested in ob-
taining West European
guarantees on top of those
to be extended by the
United States and the Soviet
Union. Mubarak, Egyptian
sources say, will also brief
Giscard on the latest devel-
opments in the Cairo talks.
Mubarak'.s tour of
France's nuclear power in-
dustry is part of Egypt's
ongoing interest in acquir-
ing more nuclear stations.
Egypt has already pur-
chased in France a 600-
megawatt nuclear power
station due to be completed
in the mid-1980s.
