THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, December 23, 1977 17 , Protests Greet Nazi Bookstore Opening Here; ACLU Meets Jewish Leaders on Member Drop An eviction notice, fire- - bombing attempt and peace- ful picketing have followed '" the opening last Saturday of a Nazi bookstore at 7608 W. Vernor, Detroit. The landlord of the build- ink said he rented the store- front two months ago to "a publisher." On Saturday, - the store opened by the Na- tional Socialist White People's Party displayed a sign reading "White Pow- er" with swastikas on each -, 'e. The store sells anti- '- ___,,,ck and anti-Semitic liter- attire. • Some 200 pickets began demonstrating in front of the store Monday, and have continued demonstrations during the week. Two De- troit policemen passing the store at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday discovered a fire on the sidewalk int front of the. store and extinguished the flames. Meanwhile, an official of the American Jewish Com- mittee has confirmed that a number of Jewish organiza- tional leaders met with American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) officials in New York this month, at the request of the ACLU, to discuss a drop in Jewish support because of the ACLU defense of First Amendment claims of Nazis. Seymour Samet, director of the AJCommittee's. do- mestic 'affairs department; said the meeting was held Dec. 7 at the offices of the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council, one of the Jewish organiza- tions participating in the meeting. The others, in ad- dition to the AJCommittee, were the American Jewish Congress, the Anti-Defama- tion League of Bnai Brith, and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. The ACLU was represent- ed by its president, Norman Dorsen, and its executive director, Arye Neier. The ACLU officials reported that in September, the ACLU lost 2,100 of its 250,000 members as a result of the ACLU decision to defend the tiny American Nazi Party which is seeking court per- mission to stage a march and demonstration, in full Nazi regalia, in Skokie, Ill., home of some 7,000 survi- vors of the Holocaust. The ACLU is supporting a African States Are Preparing to Renew Relations With Israel PARIS (JTA)—A number of African countries are pre- paring to resume diplomatic relations with Israel should the Cairo talks show some progress on the way to peace. African diplomats in Paris told the Jewish Tele- graphic Agency that several countries, including the. Ivory Coast, Senegal and Kenya, have indicated their willingness to start negotia- tions with Israel "as soon as some progress is made" in Cairo. The diplomats say these negotiations should be rela- tively simple as there are no major obstacles on the way to a resumption of nor- mal relations. - Practically all the African countries bioke off diplo- matic relations with tsrael at the time of the Yom Kippur War. In spite of this, Israel has maintained eco- nomic relations with most of them and Israeli leaders have conferred with several African presidents. Foremost among these ve been Senegal's Leop- old Senghor and the Ivory Coast's Houphouet Boigny. Kenya's President Jomo Kenyata has steered a steadfast pro-Israeli course and helped Israel carry out the rescue at Entebbe Air- port in Uganda on July 4, 1976. African diplomats say that after Egyptian Presi- dent Anwar Sadat's trip to Jerusalem last month, sev- eral countries in West Af- rica told Egypt they intend to resume relations with Is- rael. Egypt, these sources say, has asked them to post- pone any concrete steps in this direction until after peace is concluded. After an exchange of in- formal notes, the Africans said they will hold off till "some concrete progress" is made on the way to peace. The sources say the Afri- can countries will negotiate with Isreal on an individual basis and not as a bloc. The negotiations will probably take place within the frame- work of the United Nations in New York. First Amendment appeal by Frank Collin, "head" of the American Nazi Party, to the - Illinois Supreme Court to quash an injunction which bars the Skokie march. According to Samet, the ACLU officials told the Jew- ish leaders that while no organization likes to lose members, the ACLU mem- bership loss was not the key factor in their concern. It was reported that the ACLU either has held or is planning to hold similar meetings with non-Jewish groups whose -members are equally offended by ACLU determination to act in de- fense of extremist groups First Amendment grounds. Samet said that the ACLU officials sought the coopera- tion of the Jewish leaders in , understanding that the _ACLU is committed to de- fending the rights of all groups, not just those objec- tionable to Jews. The ACLU leaders told the Jewish leaders they had sought the meeting for an opportunity to explain the ACLU continued com- mitment to First Amend- ment rights, in principle, and to get reassurances that, the Jewish organizations also continued their support of those rights. The ACLU officials stressed, according to Sa- met, that their basic con- cern- was a fear that the hostile reaction of Jews and others indicated an erosion of support for the First Amendment and that they hoped the Jewish leaders would stimulate consid- eration and continued dis- cussion of that issue among their organizations' mem- bers. She said the issues for First Amendment rights posed by such activities as those of the Nazis in Skokie would be examined at a _meeting of the AJCongress National Governing Council on Jan. 8. Samet said that the AJ- Committee has organized an ad hoc committee, with Jules Whitman of Phila- delphia as chairman, which will seek to develop means for "reasonable and effec- tive responses" to extremist actions within the frame- work of the First Amend- ment. He said the ad hoc committee will seek an- swers to the question of what- happens when civil rights come in conflict. s 7,1 4 4 vISISMIS•••••• ■ • No Welcome FIRESTONE JEWELRY The man who greets his Creditors too warmly is guilty of usury in words. —Talmud vnun ludesrzle & X. invelry & U inch 23077 'Greenfield at 9 Mile (313) 557-1860. • ■•■ MISID SISSIN10111=11151 Over 45 Years Of Moving Experience TIER MOVING & STORAGE CO.
