The barrier is not language or bureaucracy, but something more profound : as a Con- servative or Reform Jew, he is a minority in his new home,- at odds with the Or- thodoxy which dominates religion in Israel. Recently, I visited Is- rael's first Reform kibutz. Its name is Yahel, mean- ing "light" or "glow." It is the latest settlement to be completed in the Arava Desert, and it was estab- lished last February by a group of young soldier-set- tlers of Nahal (the army's Pioneer Settler Corps) who are Reform Jews. To these young people, the issue of Reform Judaism in Israel is a simple one: ei- ther Orthodoxy shall wel- come the Reform move- ment, or it shall alienate a vital- branch of Judaism, in which case the loss of immi- grants and support will be tremendous. Instead, these settlers are committed to action. Work begins at 4 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. On 40 acres of Jewish National Fund-reclaimed land, they raise _ tomatoes, cucumbers and onions for export to Europe. They also grow dates and flowers. Yahel is about 65 kilome- ters north from Eilat. The vegetables, the trees and the settlers themselves are undergoing a water crisis The one well in the area has a high sulphur and iron content, making it unfit for drinking. Drinking water is being brought into the kibutz three times a day from the nearby settlement of Ketura until a filtration system is completed. The settlers are very young—between the ages of 18 and 20—and come from all parts of Israel and beyond. Housing, air-conditioned against the murderous heat, is prefabricated, modern and pleasant: single rooms Florida Detroiter Club Seeks Members Mr. and Mrs. Bernard (Anne) Panush, former De- troiters of Florida, are plan- ning a club for former De- troiters living on Florida's_ west coast—in St. Pe- tersburgh, Tampa, Largo and Clearwater.
