He spoke of the ef- forts to create good will among all faiths, of the con- cern for the less privileged, the interest shown in the need to resolve the prob- lems that have been created for Soviet Jewry, the need to teach the lessons of the Holocaust _in order to pre- vent the recurrence of Naz- ism and the urgency of giv- ing to Israel in its struggle to live securely in a peace- ful Middle East. Rabbi Israel Halpern gave the benediction and the invocation was by Rev. David A.-Harmon. Sam Levenson highlighted the evening's program with humor that was as much a sermon as it was entertain- ment. Levenson drew parallels between present-day expe- riences with those empha- sized in traditional expe- riences. The humorist was also the humanitarian mor- alist whose address was a plea for high-level teaching and the strengthening of family life. A credo he had published for the elevation of standards of living was greeted by a cheering au- dience. * * * NEW YORK—Gerald and Betty Ford were honored with the Charles Evans Hughes Award of the Na- tional Conference of Chris- tians and Jews (NCCJ), at the organization's annual awards dinner. According to Christopher S. Wren in the New York Times, Prof. Amos Per- lmutter, a Polish-born polit- ical scientist who teaches at American University in Washington, D.C., and maintains dual citizenship (U.S. and Israeli), gave a three-hour talk at the Nas- ser Military Academy, the Egyptian equivalent of the National War College in the U.S. Prof. Perlmutter said that he had been invited to ad- dress the war college by Maj. Gen. Hassan el-Keteb, spokesman for the Egyptian Army. The professor said he declined to discuss Israeli military strategy, but agreed to talk about the wide options of decision- making in the government. since 1965 on persons who have demonstrated - cou- rageous leadership in gov- ernmental, civic, and hu- manitarian affairs. - The late Chief Justice Hughes was a founder of the NCCJ. In accepting his award, the former President re- ferred to current peace in- itiatives in the Middle East. "The United States can and must lend a helping hand, - he declared. "Let me add with equal emphasis that we should not hold off that help- ing hand because the Soviet Union says no." Dr. Kissinger, who re- ceived the Hughes award himself in absentia in 1973, paid tribute to both of the honorees.
