Her strength of character is described in an impres- sive biography, "Mother R- Eleanor Roosevelt's Un- told Story" (G.P. Putnam's Sons), in the writing of which James Brough collab- orated with her son; Elliot Roosevelt. • Whatever frustrations may have existed, regard- less of obstructions caused by her staying in the back- ground in earlier years, "Mother R" assumed lead- ership that gave her status of strength after the passing of Franklin D. Roosevelt. There were family prob- lems, the infatuations of FDR, the children's man- nerisms, the idiosyncrasies of FDR's mother Sarah De- lano Roosevelt. The lead- ership inherent in the great woman was activated with ELEANOR ROOSEVELT the admiration that became her compensation. The many issues in which she became involved, the challenges she met, the in- fluence over family—these become evident in this "un- told story" in the courage that was hers. She had been outspoken against Nazism. She did not hesitate to reiterate it while on a mission to Germany after the war. She had a role in the Youth Aliya movement for Israel, and the Roosevelt- Brough story relates it: "Raising money was her principal service at the mo- Jewish Culture Foundation Establishes Arts Endowment NEW YORK—The estab- lishment of a first-time, na- tionwide program of yearly grants in support of creative Jewish expression and ex- cellence to be given to indi- vidual American artists in 'all melia, those excep- tionally promising as well as established, was an- nounced by the National Foundation for Jewish Cul- ture. Grants to individual art- ists, according to the NFJC prospectus, will range from $5,000 to $12,500, in keeping with the circumstances of the artist and his or her project requirements. The first nationwide field of entries will be opened in spring, 1978; inaugural grants will be awarded that autumn. Grant dis- bursements totalling up to $250,000 each year are con- templated for an initial three-year phase of the pro- gram's operation. artists and practitioners in each of the relevant fields. Grants will not necessarily be made each year in all areas. Financing for The Fund for the Arts, is currently being drawn, and will be sought as well in the future, exclusively from the private patron sector and from pub- lic and private foundations, and not from the organized Jewish community. It is anticiapted that the NFJC initiative will qualify in time to receive matching financial support from fed- eral agencies and state councils. holiday. We've had lovely weather, tho' the trip to Miami last Thursday was a bit bumpy. I spoke for Is- rael Bonds last night, and the auditorium was packed. "Friday all day and eve- ning was spent on AAUN with two speeches and a tong business meeting. Sat- tu-day we drove over to Farl's house, and he took us to the plane. The first day I've done no work, and I felt. it was rather an empty day! I felt let down and lacking in energy in Miami, but I feel it less here. Perhaps I'm getting accustomed to the war over China, etc. Tonight I speak for Israel Bonds here." The personalities she met with, those in government, Bernard Baruch and others, the events that challenged her interests, her responses, all combine to make "Mother R" a story of deep interest. ment for the state of Israel, too, though her ties to Zion- ism had been extended much farther. She had agreed to be a "world pa- tron," an official title, of Youth Aliyah, which had come into being originally as a kind of underground railway to save Jewish chil- dren from Nazi gas cham- bers. "And she was increas- ingly involved with young Brandeis University in Wal- tham, Massachusetts; she had addressed the first com- mencement of 101 students there, urging them to "have courage to live in uncer- tainty."
