WASHINGTON — The
Novosti Press• Agency,
through the Soviet embassy
in Washington, has an-
nounced that a new Jewish
Cameo Music Theatre has
been founded "on the in-
itiative of the public of the
Jewish Autonomous Re-
gion" in the USSR. There
has never been proof of
Jewish life in the so-called
"region."
The director of the thea-
ter says it will concentrate
on musical works by Jewish
authors, performed in either
Yiddish or Russian, but not
Hebrew. The director said,
"Yiddish is more wide-
spread and, especially, it is
the language spoken in the;
Jewish Autonomous Region.
JERUSALEM (ZINS)—A
rather sad reaction greeted
the publication of a docu-
ment included in an exhibi-
tion that was arranged in
memory of Dr. Judah L.
Magnes, a former leader of
the pacifist movement,
"Brit Shalom."
Among the 320 papers that
were displayed (supplied by
the American government)
was one that contained a
communication from Dr.
Magnes to the U.S. Secre-
tary of State a few days
before the proclamation of
the state of Israel.
On May 4, 1948 Magnes
described Israel as "a work
of art." He lamented the
fact that funds which were

Secondly, Yiddish is a liveli-

language. The trainees of
our company who do not
know Yiddish,—about 35 per-

According to the press
release, the state has
declared the theater to be a
travelling company because
Birobidzhan, the capital of
the Jewish Autonomous
Region, is a small town.
There has never been any
evidence that Jewish life
ever developed there.

States were being used for
purposes of war.
According to Magnes the
Hagana (the Jewish self-
defense organization) was
using upward of $4 million
daily. Magnes appealed to
General Marshall asking
that the flow of funds should
be stopped so that "the Jew-
ish war machine" will be
forced to grind to a halt.

U.S. Role
Invites Failure
Strong
NEW YORK (JTA)—U.S.
Sen. Patrick J. Leahy of
Vermont told an Israel Bond
audience that the United
States "would invite failure
of the current effort to nego-
tiate a permanent peace" in
the Middle East if it tries to
take a direct role in dis-
cussions initiated by Egypt
and Israel.
Declaring that "President
Sadat and Prime 1Vfinister
Begin seem to be pro-
ceeding along well enough,"
Leahy, a freshman Demo-
crat, said he did not want to
see the United States "in-
sert itself between the par-
ties and suggest the terms
of a settlement."
Instead, he called on
President Carter to seek to
"create a more favorable
climate for the successful
resolution of the Begin-Sa-
dat initiative" by "cultivat-
ing" the moderate Arab
states and "weaning them
from their Soviet depend-
ence.''
