The main reason, it appears, is that a large proportion of non-Jewish spouses convert to Judaism and that the birthrate of these couples makes up for the losses. This is one of the con- clusions from a recently completed computerized analysis of an extensive sur- vey conducted in the United States on intermarriage among Jews. While the sur- vey itself was carried out several years ago, the com- puterized analysis was com- pleted only recently at Bar- Ilan University in Israel by Prof. Bernard Lazerwitz, a research expert who used the university's giant IBM computer to reach his con- clusions. The survey showed that 31 percent of spouses from mixed marriage convert to CELEBRATE WITH ISR \ EL'S ilOth •NNIVERS Experiment in tz Living 197 ‘'.!4 -es A SPECIAL TOURING & WORKING PROJECT FOR 151/2 THRU 17 YEAR OLDS FOR DETAILS CONTACT: .‘',71 `,tintrt. Prof. Lazerwitz found that these formerly mixed couples want to have more children than those where the non-Jewish spouse failed to convert to Judaism. Furthermore, he found that the converted are generally as committed to Judaism as are born Jews. In addition, Jews whose spouses converted, have more Jewish education than those whose spouses did not convert. Thus, there is every chance that the children of those 31 percent of intermarriages where the non-Jewish spouse converted to Judaism, will get a Jewish upbringing. Conversely there is no certainty that the children of the other marriages will not. According to the Bar-Ilan professor's analysis, by the start of the 1970's only seven percent of the Jewish adults. who have been married at any time ever intermarried. The figure reaches 14 per- cent, however, when applied to currently married Jews under 35 years of age. The figure goes still higher — 20 percent — for second mar- riages by Jewish couples whose first marriage has failed. Prof. Lazerwitz's advice for communal and religious authorities who want to help reduce intermarriage is to extend extra help to those Jews whose marriages break up and are thus the most prone to intermarry subsequently. 1—TWENTY-ONE YESHIVOT BNEI AKIVA 2—TWELVE YESHIVOT HESDER 3—NINETY-EIGHT RELIGIOUS AGRICULTURAL SETTLEMENTS 4—TWO-HUNDRED-EIGHTY-THREE RELIGIOUS RECREATION AND - CULTURAL C,ENTERS IN ISRAEL 5—EIGHT HUNDRED-AND-SEVEN RELIGIOUS KINDERGARTENS 6—FIFTY-ONE RELIGIOUS VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS 7—FORTY-THREE RELIGIOUS CONSUMER COOPERATIVES 8—FIFTY-THREE YOUTH ALIYAH GROUPS AND VILLAGES 9—TWO HUNDRED FREE LOAN AGENCIES 10---BAR ILAN UNIVERSITY 11—BNEI AKIVA YOUTH MOVEMENTS 12—RELIGIOUS STATE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM 13—KASHRUTH AND SABBATH OBSERVANCE IN DEF_ENSE FORCES AND ALL PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS 14--PROJECTION OF NATIONAL LAW FOR SABBATH AS DAY OF REST 15—MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE LAWS IN KEEPING WITH HALACHA 16—EXCLUSIVE AUTHORITY OF TORAH JUDAISM THROUGH CHIEF RABBINATE, BETH DIN (RELIGIOUS COURTS) AND RELIGI1OUS COUNCILS 17—TORAH CULTURE DEPARTMENT OF WORLD ZIONIST MOVEMENT 18—RELIGIOUS SOCIAL SERVICES Katzirs Conclude THE RELIGIOUS ZIONIST MOVEMENT SLATE HAS BEEN ENDORSED BY: Visit to Americas TEL AVIV t (JTA)—Presi- dent Ephraim Katzir and Mrs. Katzir returned last week from an 18-day visit to Mexico and Central Amer- ica.
