Trotsky's Knowledge of Yiddish,
Forward Articles in Biography

Freie Arbeiter Shtimme Folds,
Was Oldest U.S. Yiddish Paper

Leon Trotsky must have
had a knowledge of Yiddish.
This is the assumption of
Robert Payne, in his biogra-
phy, "The Life and Death of
Leon Trotsky" (McGraw
Hill Book Co.)
After describing Trotsky's
home life, his parentage, his

oldest Yiddish newspaper in
the United States, Freie Ar-
beiter Shtimme (Free Voice
of Labor), ceased pub-
lication Nov. 30 because of
insoluble financial
problems.
In its 87 years of pub-
lication, the organ of Jewish
anarchist philosophy had a
peak weekly circulation of
30,000. Its last press run as
a monthly was 1,700 copies.
Ahrne Thorne, the editor
who has comprised the pa-
per's editorial staff, said the
newspaper could not sup-
port itself from its first day
of publication. Because the
paper could afford to pay
only a bookkeeper, Thorne
volunteered his services,
starting 47 years ago.

studies, which included
Jewish subjects under spe-
cial tutors, Payne states:
"Since he was a Jew who
conversed with Jews, it is
likely that he spoke Yiddish
.. . which was their com-
mon language all over Rus-
sia."

He was, of course, the
arch revolutionary, and be-
fore World War I he evi-
dence his "doctrinaire
bent" on New York's East
Side.

That's when he wrote arti-
cles for Novy Mir, the Rus-
sian language paper, and
the Yiddish Jewish Daily
Forward. An article in the
latter is quoted at length.
Did he write in Yiddish?
This is not affirmed, and
Payne mentions the role of
Ludwig Lore, who was
Trotsky's interpreter and
translator.
Trotsky's tragic end is
told in the collective data
provided by Payne. The
complexities and enigmas
of the man are given em-
phasis in the Payne biogra-
phy.„Payne notes:

NEW YORK (JTA)—The

no limit to his daring. Like
Napoleon he dared to do
impossible things, and like
Napoleon he was deeply
troubled when he learned
that not everyone admired
him and that there were
many who wanted to de-
stroy him. So he became
one of the tragic giants of
our time, and not the least
of them."

The Jewish aspects in the
life of Trotsky would un-
doubtedly consume an equal
number of pages as in the
present Payne biography.
These elements are not in-
cluded in the otherwise ex-
tremely valuable work on
one of the most sensational
personalities of this cen-
tury.

THE UJA CONCLAVE: The four-day national confer-
ence of the United Jewish Appeal is taking place in New
York this Hanuka week in an atmosphere of hope for
Arab-Israel peace deliberations. However, the assembled
community leaders are at the same time well aware of
the fact that Israel has this year devalued its currency
several times. and that this signifies that UJA funds will
have to be forthcoming in 1978 even to a greater extent.
SYMBOL OF UNITY: The UJA today continues to be the
symbol of unity in the American Jewish community.
Contributing to this is the strong link between the Jewish
federations and the UJA—a link that was strengthened by

of the UJA and later president of the Council of Jewish

The importance of this link was emphasized recently by

Leonard R. Strelitz, the present general chairman of the
UJA, in addressing federation leaders. The Council Of

Jewish Federations and the United Jewish Appeal, he said,
are like two arms which may function independently but
serve the same body. The UJA receives funds from 217
large communities affiliated with the CJF and from 472
small communities served by the CJF.
DRAPERY CLEANERS
There are today about 1 million donors to the UJA.
Strelitz thinks that this is not enough. In his estimate, 50
percent of the Jewish families in this country do not

contribute. He wants to reach them through education to
commitment.
