44 Friday, December 9, 1977 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Ex-Hillel Chief Kapustin Gets WSU-Beth El Franklin Prize Rabbi Max Kapustin, di- rector of Wayne State Uni- versity's Bnai Brith Hillel Foundation for more than 25 years, has been named the first recipient of the annual Leo M. Franklin Award in Human Relations presented by Temple Beth El and Wayne State .University. The Leo M. Franklin Award replaces the annual Memorial Lecture in Hu- man Relations established at WSU in 1950 by the Franklin Memorial Fund of Temple Beth El. Recogni- tion will now be given an- nually to a student, alumnus, faculty member or individual identified with WSU who has made a signif- icant contribution in the field of human relations. Rabbi Kapustin came to Wayne State in 1948 after serving as rabbi for the city of Danville, Va., for 10 years. An adjunct professor of Near Eastern Languages and Literature at WSU, Rabbi Kapustin attended the Universities of Berlin and Heidelberg graduating with a PhD magna cum laude in Semitic languages, philosophy and history. He came to the United States in 1937. His years of dedication to marked in 1973 by a testi- monial dinner at Cong. Shaarey Zedek. He was awarded a faculty research grant on the Holocaust in 1970 and was one of the key persons in the WSU Confer- ence in 1971. He also was invited by West Germany on a study trip in 1973. /N.
