NCCJ'S Dr. Hyatt Seeks New Majority
NEW YORK—The presi-
dent of the National Confer-
ence of Christians and Jews
has called for a new major-
ity in America, "not a silent
majority, but a concerned
majority" in a statement
inaugurating the 50th Anni-
versary of the NCCJ.
Dr. David Hyatt called for
this "new breed of men and
women" in a special anni-
French Make Appeal for Palestinians
PARIS (JTA)—Two
prominent French personal-
ities, former Premier
Pierre Mendes-France and
philosopher Jean-Paul
Sartre, appealed Monday to
Israel to recognize the Pa-
lestinian people.
Mendes-France, who was
in Israel last month during
the visit of President Anwar
Sadat of Egypt, said in an
interview with the Socialist
weekly, Le Nouvel Observa-
teur, that Israel should
grant the Palestinian people
the same rights Israel has.
Sarte, a near recluse who
has not appeared or spoken
in public for several years,
made his appeal to Israel to
recognize the "Palestinian
nation" on the front page of
Le Monde.

Challenge Ahead," Dr.
Hyatt emphasized that it
was imperative for the
country to develop a "con-
cerned majority who care
deeply to a point where it
hurts them inside."
The caring he enumerated

Sinai Hospital Army of Volunteers
Earns Priority Role on Anniversary
Services rendered by
Sinai Hospital volunteers
have earned a place of pri-
ority in services rendered in
the health agency's 25-year
history, Jane Blumberg,
president of Sinai Hospital
Guild stated this week as
the Guild joined in the hos-
pital's anniversary celebra-
tion.
Joining with Mrs. Blum-
berg in acclaiming the role
of the volunteer, Mrs. Tubie
(Gertrude) Resnik joined
with her in an appeal for
expansion of the service.
In an invitation for men
and women of all ages in
the community to enroll in
the army of volunteers,
Mrs. Blumberg said, "Many
couples, friends, and fami-
lies find this a gratifying
way to spend their free
time. Not only can friends
and families be together,
but they can make a big
contribution to their com-
munity at the same time."
The gift shop at Sinai Hos-
pital provides funds for the

years ago.

Day School Support Backed
Editor, The Jewish News:.
I wish to commend you on
your Nov. 25 editorial, "U.S.
Jewry's Lack. of Vision in
Pursuing Educational
Needs."
As president of Akiva He-
brew Day School, I realize
that the only effective an-
swer to the survival of our
people is through intensive
Jewish education.
In this era of chaos within
the American Jewish com-
munity, assimilation, inter-
marriage and a sharp de-
crease in the Jewish birth
rate pose ever-increasing
threats to Jewish survival.
Yeshivat Akiva is showing
direction toward a Jewish
future.
Only an educated Jewry,
well-versed in our tradition
and history and willing to
participate in modein life,
can endure.
None would deny the im-
perative need which is being
met not only by Akiva, but
by all Day Schools...the pos-
itive survival of Jewish
group life in America.
What has been so magnifi-
cently gained by a com-
mitted few, must now be
fully sustained by the entire
community so that our Day
Schools may flourish as cen-
ters of learning of the very
highest quality developing
the finest caliber of tradi-
tionally and secularly edu-
cated Jewish Americans.

Herbert Speiser
Community Council
Criticism Upheld
Editor, The Jewish News:
I read with great interest
the well-documented letter
from Dr. Milton
Steinhardt, in which amc
other statements, he dis-
cusses the • undemocratic
way in which the elections
of officers and board mem
bers are conducted at the
Jewish Community Council.
I am a delegate to the
Jewish Community. Council
and I, myself raised the
same question at an annual
meeting, to which I re-
ceived no answer or expla-
nation.
I hope that impartial,
well-meaning, people who
are interested in the welfare
of our Jewish community
will take steps to see that
these matters are in-
vestigated further.
