There are 100,000 Kurds in the Soviet Union. A small minority of the Kurds are -Christian and their language is Aramaic. Jews lived in Kurdistan since the Babylonian exile Due to topographic condi- tions (high mountains and deep valleys) these Jews were separated from the big _Jewish centers, but they preserved their religion and customs, and were not absorbed into the native population. In the 12th Century, Messianic movement grew up among the Jews in Kur- distan, led by David Alroy and his father, Shlomo al- Ruhi, who both met tragic- ends: Alrorwas murdered by his father-in-law, w was afraid of the outcome of Messianism. The Kurdish Jews always -had a strong attachment towards Israel. In the begin- .ning of the 19th Century, some Kurdish Jewecame to Jerusalem and settle there. Until the estab- lishment of the state -of Israel in 1948, there were approximately 20,000 Kur- dish Jews in Israel. After the establishment of the - state 10,000 more came to Israel.
