Most Kurds are Moslems,
living in Turkey (three Mil-
lion), Iran (one million) an
in Syria (300,000). There are
100,000 Kurds in the Soviet
Union. A small minority of
the Kurds are -Christian and
their language is Aramaic.

Jews lived in Kurdistan
since the Babylonian exile
Due to topographic condi-
tions (high mountains and
deep valleys) these Jews
were separated from the big
_Jewish centers, but they
preserved their religion and
customs, and were not
absorbed into the native
population.
In the 12th Century,
Messianic movement grew
up among the Jews in Kur-
distan, led by David Alroy
and his father, Shlomo al-
Ruhi, who both met tragic-
ends: Alrorwas murdered
by his father-in-law, w
was afraid of the outcome of
Messianism.
The Kurdish Jews always
-had a strong attachment
towards Israel. In the begin-
.ning of the 19th Century,
some Kurdish Jewecame to
Jerusalem and settle
there. They dressed differ-
ently from the local popu-
lation, continued with their
_customs, and separated.
themselves _from other
Jews. Until the estab-
lishment of the state -of
Israel in 1948, there were
approximately 20,000 Kur-
dish Jews in Israel. After
the establishment of the -
state 10,000 more came to
Israel. Today, there are
100,000 - Kurdish Jews ilk_
Israel, with 35,000 in Jerusa-
and
lem, 10,000 in Ha .
others living in age
ral
settlements.
The Kurdish , Jews are
preserving their - customs,
traditions and folklore and
some of them are researchs'
ing their history -and
folklore.

People come to the Soha-
rama clad in their speci
Kurdish garments. The
initiative to celebrate the
festival came. from the
older people, who are still
very strongly attached to
their former homeland. But
the younger generation, too,
became more and more
interested in the Kurdish
tradition and found they
could best fulfill their ethnic.:
desire through the
Soharama.
In the 11th Century, Kur-
distan was a vast country o
high mountains and deep
valleys stretchinom
northern Iraq to the Ilelgoian
Sea. The Kurdish Gentiles
are not a Semitic people,
but Molopersians. Their lan-
guage is Indo-European and
is similar to Persian. The
Kurds are divided into
tribes, most of whom do not
live in cities. -
