"Israel to me represents a place where a black person can walk down any street with an easy stride and feel free, and where African nations can benefit from the lessons of the kibutz." These words come from Ms. Lillian Roberts, a black woman, who as associate director of District Council 37 of the American Feder- ation of State, County and Municipal Employes, is one of the highest ranking female national labor leaders. The solft-spoken, attrac- tive Ms. Roberts' love affair with Israel began • during • her first visit there seven years ago as part of a Hista- drut tour. She recently returned from her third trip to the Jewish state. Only two days after her return, friends and associ- ates in all walks of life paid tribute to Ms. Roberts at a testimonial dinner tendered by the Trade Union Division of the Greater New York Committee for State of Israel Bonds which was held at New York's Essex House. Close to 500 prominent fig- ures in labor, industry and government purchased more than $550,000 in Israel Bonds to attend the event, at which she received the Israel Menora Award. In accepting the award, Ms. Roberts said that she enjoys being in Israel and that she was "impressed with the economic progress I witnessed at first hand, much of it accomplished with the aid of Israel Bond funds. I came back home with a particular feeling of _accomplishment in that tiny country," she stated, "and with the hope that we in this country and, especially the black people, can win our struggle and reach our des- tiny, too." Ms. Roberts told- the audience that during her latest travels in Israel as a 'delegate of the Black Amer- icans to Support Israel Com- mittee (BASIC), which was headed by Bayard Rustin, she visited the African- Asian Institute and met with Third World students study- ing there. She also talked with a group of trade union- ists from Sierra Leone whom she had met while conducting a seminar in Israel last spring during her second visit. "It is not only technology that these black students learn in Israel," she stated. "Most of them for the first time in their lives are seeing a living democracy at work. They see it, feel it and they go back home with a new set of ideals to offer their own countries." Ms. Roberts said that she and the BASIC delegates also conferred with Golda Meir. They discussed the group of Black Jews who have been permitted by the government to settle in Israel. "I was also impressed with the work being carried out in the , Hadassah Hospital, where doctors speak in the lan- guage of every patient, par- ticularly to Arab children and their parents," she asserted. - "The feeling of care and concern of every doctor there is quite appar- ent. It is amazing how few doctors in America have taken the trouble to learn Spanish for their Mexican- American and Puerto Rican patients." French news agencies re- ceived phone messages from callers who said they placed the bomb on behalf of the self-styled Tel al Zaa- ter organization. The group takes its name from a Pa- lestinian refugee camp in Lebanon which was cap- tured by the Christian forces during last year's civil war. The bank's glass facade was smashed and cars parked in the area were damaged by the blast. No- body was hurt. JEWISH NATIONAL FUND 22100 Greenfield Road Oak Park, Michigan 48237 968-0820 =TREES
