I found the perform- ance quite moving. I felt that the film successfully addressed black suffering as an individual case of hu- man suffering, such that I, as a Jew, was able to identi- fy with black suffering as an instance of the same human suffering forced upon the Jewish people throughout the ages. Alex Haley might also have_ been speaking for the Jewish people when he pre- sented the view, that to know one's history is to know one's self. The concentration camp is my history. Those who suffered it shall be honored. But let us not only honor those who were executed. Let us bestow honor equally on those who have been forced to live with the taste of death on their lips —Mein Zeydeh, Mein Mameh, Mein Tateh — their numbers are many! Men and women, young and old, you and I! All determined to survive and tell their stories so that their children, and their children's children, might also tell their stories. Stories of labor-camp workers, barely alive, per- forming at miraculous ca- pacity. Stories of the hun- gry, frightened child, frantically dodging the same machinegun bullets that beat his mother into the ground. All determined to survive! Ask me why it is so im- portant to me that my chil- dren remember, and identi- fy with, those who suffered the Nazi terror? This is why: So that my children may honor them, as I honor them, and so that, for gen- rations to come, we, as a People, stand warned — united — and alert!
