The action over- whelmingly adopted Nov. 21 day by a "jubilant" 54th _ biennial General Assembly of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations - (UAHC) established the As- sociation of Reform Zionists of America (ARZA) and Ka- dima—the Canadian Council of Reform Zionists. Leaders indicated that the Reform movement will now for the first time have an effective voice within world Zionism, thus challenging the dominance enjoyed by Orthodox Judaism since the inception of Zionism 80 years ago. Heretofore, Re- form Jews have partici- pated only as members of other Zionist organizations. Commenting on this, rab- bi' Roland B. Gittelsohn of Boston, ARZA chairman, noted that while Reform Jews have played a leading role in building and main- taining Israel, the voice of Reform Judaism has never been present in an organiz- ed fashion; while the deci- sion of the WZO does not directly affect Israel's inter- anl policy, its deliberations are regarded with extreme sensitivity by Israeli policy- makers. - Rabbi Alexander M. Schindler, UAHC president, told the 3,500 delegates "We want to have an impact on the quality of life in Israel and to intensify its Jew- ishness. We seek-not to poli- ticize Reform Judaism, but to spiritualize Zionism."
