Simon Wiesenthal brought his message to the thou- sands who attended his lec- ture and the Sabbath morn- ing service at Cong. Shaarey Zedek and the tens of thousands who heard him on radio and television over which the interviews with him were reported and recorded. Shaarey Zedek, Friday night, emphasized. He is the survi- vor who sees the danger of a recurring Holocaust unless humanity is kept alerted to its menace, and by keeping reminded of what had occurred will be as dedicated as he is to labor against repetition of the Nazi crimes. In his revelations, describing his "experience as head of the Jewish Docu- mentation Center he estab- lished in Vienna, Wiesenthal warned of the spread of neo- Nazism and the source of anti-Semitism that provides many hate publications with the imprimatur of Ameri- can publishing addresses. He also indicated that some 130 known Nazis who were responsible for the murders of large numbers of Jews are in the United States, and he said that only if legislation proposed in the U.S. Congress is enforced will it be possible to bring the mass murderers to justice. The reason Dr. Josef Mengele, the mass mur- derer, is still at large in Paraguay, he said, is because of the German influence in that country, the wealth Nazi escapees brought with them there and their domination in the government. He also said that another Nazi mass murderer, Valter Rauff similarly is escaping judgment in Chile. Once again, Wiesenthal said there has been a blun- der in Jewish ranks in speaking of the Six Million. While this is true, he said, he declared that the empha- sis should be on the 11,000,000 who were mur- dered, Christians as well as Jews. He called attention to the new Nazi campaign of ridi- culing the facts of the Holocaust, of calling them myths, and called for organ- ized efforts to overcome this inhuman and criminal tactic. He said to prevent the repetition of the Holocaust, the younger and future gen- erations must be alerted to the events of that era. He said that the trials of the criminals rather than the -execution of them was "his- torically valuable" and was a means to educate youth and future generations about the perils of Nazism. "Part of my activity is to bring this thing to the people, to make them not forget. I will do this as long as I am physically able." At the Sabbath services, Wiesenthal and Rabbi Gro- ner discussed the guest's "Sun Flower." which deals with forgiveness and which was reviewed briefly in last week's Jewish News. Wiesenthal's appearance here was part of the Shaarey Zedek cultural pro- gram. His lectures were sponsored by Shaarey Zedek President William Davidson and his family. Meanwhile, Howard Blum, author of "Wanted! The Search for Nazis in America," appealed to a Book Fair audience of more than 200 persons Thursday to help bring the war crimi- nals living in the U.S. to justice. "We have to demonstrate our moral character by bringing the 143 war crimi- nals to justice. We can only do it with your help." In his lecture at the Jew- ish Community Center, Blum talked about the U.S. government's role in the prosecution of four of the most widely known alleged war criminals living out their lives in America: Andrija Artukovic, Nicolae Malaxa, Bishop Valerian (Viorel) Trifa, and Boles- lays Maikovskis. He called his book an "indfctment" of the U.S. for allowing them to live out their lives qui- etly, unprosecuted. Blum said he was not hop- ing for vengeance in track- ing down the criminals, only justice. "We owe it to the survivors. We have a responsibility now and to future generations." Blum said he saw people in government responding to his book. Representative Elizabeth Holtzman of New York called for full scale Congressional hearings into what Blum said she called "a cover-up" regarding the prosecution of alleged Nazi war criminals. U.S. Attorney General Griffin Bell appointed a 12-man task force to investigate war criminals living here.
