Changing Traditions Derided

For Hanukah

Editor, The Jewish News:
Playing with 'traditions'
is dangerous for a religion's
health. Changing religious
interpretations and existing
traditional procedures is
similar to injecting a poi-
sonous venom.

First came changes con-
cerning the role of the
woman in the Shabat morn-
ing service. Then followed
changes and changes in the
Bat Mitzva ceremony. Each
synagogue adopted a differ-
ent procedure and concept.
Unity became scarce.
Converts shopped around
for the best conversion buy.
Temples were found to be
saviors. Then some conserv-
ative synagogues also
reformed themselves on this
issue. Unity again
disappeared.
The traditional ceremony
to demonstrate a young
man's acceptance of his
own religious responsibility,
called traditionally Bar Nllt-
zva, changed from syna-
gogue to synagogue. In
addition to ceremonial
changes, requirements for
the young ineu were
created.
When pre-Bar Mitzva and
pre-Bat Mitzva students are
threatened into attending a
junior congregation service,
rules being changed year to
year, students being forced
to sing their Bar-Bat Nlitzva
ceremony presentations for
a junior congregation leader
and board of directors
member, a positive Jewish
attitude cannot be expected.
Judaism cannot afford to
lose future Jewish gener-
ations because of such
changes and rule making
situations.

Dr. Maxwell Hoffman,
who recently accepted the
role of State of Israel Bond
Cash Collection chairman,
announced that the drive to
collect outstanding Israel
Bond subscriptions has
reached the one-third mark.
"Some $500,000 has been
collected toward our goal of
$1.5 million before the end
of the year," said Dr. Hoff-
man, who declared that in
order to speed the remain-
ing payments, help is being
requested of leadership and
"cash collection com-
mittees" of all synagogues
and organizations who have
participated in the 1977
Israel Bond Campaign.
