We also thank our relatives and friends for their Good Wishes, Moral Support and Contributions guests of the Jewish Histori- cal Society of Michigan, with the dedication of a bronze plaque in the main Jewish Community Center library. The plaque com- memorates Chapman Abra- ham, whose first appear- ance in Detroit is mentioned in 1762, when he was doing business with James Ster- ling, a well-known Detroit merchant. Chapman, prob- ably a native Germany, came originally to Canada from England around 1760. In Montreal, he was a mem- ber of Canada's first Jewish congregation, Shearith Israel. A year after Abraham's arrival at the fort of Detroit (taken by the English from the French in 1760), he was captured by the Indians dur- ing the uprising led by Chief Pontiac. After being tor- tured and nearly burned at the stake, Abraham was finally set free by the Indians, who mistook an read the text of the plaque, and Allen A. Warsen, founder and honorary presi- dent of the Historical Society, made the formal dedication. outburst of anger by him to be insanity. Abraham afterwards was a resident of Detroit for many years and he carried on a successful business here. He owned property, and sold a variety of prod- ucts, including liquor, furs, gunpowder, tobacco and real estate. In later years he moved to Montreal, where he died in 1783. Doris Easton, president of the JHSM, acted as master of ceremonies of the dedica- tion ceremony. Dr Abraham Rogoff, chairman of the JHSM historic projects committee, made the invocation and described the five other markers and plaques in which the Histor- ical Society has had a hand in establishing. Mrs. Maltzer is the for- mer first vice president of NM as well as a member of its executive committee. She also served on the Reform movement's Israel Commission.
