Conservative Parley Faces Problem of Low Births, Increase in Singles

KIAMESHA LAKE, N.Y.
(JTA)—To the synagogue's
problem of "that vanishing
institution, the Jewish fam-
ily," once the bulwark of
Jewish life, must now be
added the phenomenon of
the rapidly growing divorce
rate and its result—the
single parent.
This, the "chilling
impact" of the declining
birthrate and the increasing
age level of congregational
membership cry out for top
priority action, according to
Arthur J. Levine, president
of the United Synagogue of
America, the association of
Conservative synagogues.
Some 2,000 delegates
attended the United Syna-
gogue's biennial convention
which ended last week_
Little or nothing has been
done about the problem of
integrating the single parent

into congregational life
"except by offering it lower
congregational dues status.
To maintain a sense of Jew-
ish identification in a home
where there are two parents
sharing the responsibility is
difficult enough," Levine
declared in his presidential
address, marking the end of
his second and final two-
year term.
Another speaker at the
convention was former
Israel Defense Minister Shi-
mon Peres, who addressed
the group Nov. 16.
On another front, the
United Synagogue stood
firm on its traditional oppo-
sition to federal and state
aid to religious education by
discarding overwhelmingly
a resolution_ which would
have called for a study of
the matter.
In another resolution, the
convention overwhelmingly
re-endorsed the equal rights
amendment and called on
those states which have not
already done so to ratify it.

Earlier in the week, the
United Synagogue refused
to endorse "Mercaz," a
Zionist. organization
recently founded to express
the aims of the Conserva-

Zionist movement in
America.
The convention, after a
long and bitter debate,
removed the question from
consideration by voting
overwhelmingly to table a
resolution which would have
endorsed the organization.
The resolution did not

NEW YORK—The gue-

documented for the first

The book is published by

from interviews with over
