Israel Gets Gift of Gratitude From Detroit Christian Arab

By HEIDI PRESS
Detroiter Heidi
Brancheau, a Maronite
Christian Arab, returned
from Israel last week, -
where she paid gratitude to
the country for its aid to the
Lebanese Christians at the
border area and to Leba-
nese students studying in
Israel.
Mrs. Brancheau pre-
sented a gift of $5,000 to
Haifa University which had
developed programs to ben-
efit needy Lebanese stu-
dents who wished to study
in Israel.
She said that "leaders of
the Lebanese community in
Israel were afraid to speak
out" on Israel's behalf, and
she wanted to publicly
thank the country for its
humanitarian efforts toward
the Lebanese.
She said she was well
received by both Arabs and
Israelis in Israel, and her
biggest contributors to help

She cited the free medical
care given to the Lebanese,
the protection given to
small border villages and
the non-taxation of Leba-
nese citizens who work in
Israel. "Economically, the
Lebanese never had it so
good," she said.
Mrs. Brancheau will begin
a speaking tour for the

Friends of Haifa University
on behalf of the university.
Asked if she will try to get
her remaining relatives out
of Lebanon, she answered
negatively. "If everyone
leaves Lebanon it will fall
into the hands of the PLO."
She said as long as Israel's
"good fence" exists at the
border, she will not try to
