gates was in the twenties
and thirties and many in
their forties. Contrasted by
other national movements,
the CJFWF experience is
perhaps the most vital sign
offered to counteract the
pessimistic view of the
future envisioned by
sociologists.
Jerold Hoffberger, who
was re-elected CJFWF pres-
ident. is among the firm
supporters of a program for
Israel which has helped
assure the aspired-to unity.
Raymond Epstein, who
preceded Hoffberger as
CJFWF president, and who
had one of the important
roles in General Assembly
procedures, posed the ques-
tion of unity and he com-
mented that the activities at
the General Assembly and
the responses participating
communities—literally hun-
dreds of them—provide the
"clearest manifestation of
unity in American Jewish
ranks."
Epstein will be remem-
bered as the CJFWF leader
who, upon his retirement as
president, urged abandon-
ment of duplication of
efforts in Jewish ranks,
especially in the civic-pro-
tective areas.

important role presiding
over one of the most vital of
the GA symposia, the one
dealing with Federation-
Synagogue relations. It is at
these sessions that religious
leaders and lay people,
interested in the synagogue
as an important force in
communal programming as
well as in philanthropy,
gather to prepare for coop-
erative tasks in all fields of
Jewish endeavor.
Rabbi Seymour Rose-
nbloom of Adat Shalom
Synagogue, this year's
selectee as Greater
Detroit's rabbinic represen-
tative at the General
Assembly, was one of the 34
Community Rabbinical
Award Recipients at the GA
and was an active partici-
pant in the Federation-
Synagogue and other sym-
posia at the conference.
In addition to Detroit,
Flint, Grand Rapids, Kala-
mazoo and Lansing had
delegations at the GA ses-
sions, the Flint delegation
again being one of the
impressive among the
smaller cities'
representations.
Next year's General
Assembly will be in San
Francisco, to be followed in
1979 by Montreal, and in
1980 by Detroit as host
cities.

There is a tale of interest
in these selections. The GA
in 1975 was to be in Detroit.
The lack of hotel accom-
modations compelled a
change.
