Basketball is becoming a nine-month-a-year operation in Israel, and exceeds in duration even the lengthy NBA campaign which is beginning to pall on some of the fans in the United States. In the first international game played thus far, Tel Aviv Hapoel walloped the Greek Panatinaikos team by 19 points. But in the return match in Athens, Panatinaikos whipped Hap- oel by 20 points, eliminating them from the Cup-to-Cup series. The game ended in a near riot when the Israelis threatened bodily harm to the Romanian referee, the chief official, who they claimed, "stole” the game from them. Hapoel had been leading through most of the contest. Meanwhile, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Israel's premier team, is preparing to defend its European championship in the Federation Cup play. In order to strengthen the club, which was weakened by the departure of Lou Sil- ver, who came back to the United States for a knee operation, the Maccabi club signed Bob Fleisher, for- merly of Duke University and a member of the United States 1973 Maccabia team.. Fleisher spent the last sea- son playing in Italy and was lured away with a lucrative contract by the Israeli team. It appears that he reported out of shape, hav- ing gained quite a bit of weight, and the Maccab- beans are, to say the least, very much disappointed in his showing thus far. It is their opinion that if Lou Sil- ver, who is back in Israel, doesn't start playing shortly, they will have diffi- culty in defending their championship. In addition to Silver being out with an injury, Eric Nfinkin, another U.S. 1973 Maccabia star, has been sidelined with an injury which was sustained during the 1977 Maccabia Games. Tal Brody, who was look- ing forward •to retirement this year, has found it nec- essary to return to the Mac- cabi club to bolster the backcourt. Brody is doing exceptionally well in the sporting goods business, and, quite frankly, is a little tired of playing due to the fact that both his legs are giving him trouble. How- ever, he is loyal to the team which made it possible for him to get started in busi- ness when he first settled in Tel Aviv. An interesting note con- cerning the European championship is that Rus- sia, supposedly, in prepara- tion for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, has decided to abstain from European Cup play this year. The National Team will be visiting the United States under its Jew- i G .01.1 (‘• ish coach, Gomulsky, and will play some of the tougher American college quintets rather than meet- ing the top European cup contestants. Ernie Grunfeld, the only Jewish player in the NBA, is off to a good start with the Milwaukee Bucks. He is being used both at guard and forward positions and is averaging between 18 and 24 points a game. In addition, he is scoring in double fig- ures, and in general living up to expectations. The Youth Branch of the Riverdale Jewish Center in New York has come up with an excellent idea for helping the plight of Soviet Jewry. On Nov. 19-20 (Saturday night and Sunday), the youth group is holding an 18- hour Chai basketball mara- thon in order to raise money for Soviet Jewry.
