Stem, a 33-year-old Weiz-
mann Institute engineer,
working under the super-
vision of Prof. S. Shtrikman
of the institute's electronics
department, has developed
a computer method for
determining optimum
beauty—in diamonds, that
is.
The recent Russian immi-
grant's research, which con-
stituted his MSc, thesis, is
much more than an exercise
in aesthetics. It is, in fact,
of great interest to the dia-
mond trade, Israel's largest
export industry, where
transforming every givin
gem into the most perfect
diamond possible, with an
absolute minimum of loss in
the cutting process, is a
matter of prime
importance.
Stern introduced the sci-
ence of optics. To arrive at
a measure for beauty in dia-
monds, the institute scien-
tist dealt with each diamond
as if it were a complicated
optical prism. By using a
technique called computer
ray tracing, Stern developed
a mathematical model of an
optical system whose main
element is a diamond. He
then used this computerized
model to compare a series
of brilliant cut diamonds of

different sizes and propor-
tions classed by the experts
as being superior, with
another group which were
classes as inferior.

"With the help of our
mathematical model, we
found that all the superior
diamonds produced similar
optical patterns on the corn-
puter screen. In scientific
terms what we discovered
is that all beautiful dia-
monds are characterized by
a definite distribution of
light in the Fourier plane,"
Stern explains.

As a result of these find-
ings, Stem hopes that his
mathematical models will
eventually be used to plan
the optimal shape for a dia-
mond—before a single cut
has been made. By elimi-
nating trial and error, this
method will save money,
and help assure that each
stone is cut to achieve the
maximum aethetic effect.

Pointe Pelee

"Point Pelee : Canada's
Deep South" by Darryl
Stewart, with contributions
by Don Ross (Wayne State
University Press), presents
an in-depth look at one of
Canada's and North Amer-
ica's geographical ano-
molies. Whereas most of
Canada ranges from tem-
perate to arctic climati-
cally, Point Pelee, a sandy
peninsula in Lake Erie near
Leamington, Ontario, lies
farther south than any other
part of the Canadian main-
land, practically all in the
same latitude as northern
California.
Thus Point Pelee is able
to support vegetation and
wildlife that are more char-
acteristic of the southern
United States than the rest
of Canada.
Bound in soft cover, Stew-
art's book examines in
detail the fauna of this
remarkable corner of Can-
ada. There are chapters on
birds, mammals, reptiles
and amphibians, fish and
insects. Photographs, many
in color, and detailed draw-
ings illustrated the natural
wonders of this Canadian
peninsula.
The book also contains a
foreword by noted Canadian
writer Pierre Burton, a
guide for visiting Point
Pelee and a list of suggested
readings for the amateur
naturalist.
